Just to be clear, I'm talking about the "Custom Background" option in the character builder, not homebrew backgrounds.
When you throw together a custom background based on another background, you are given the option to choose another background to base it on (in the form of the feature and characteristics). However, when you do this you don't get any starting equipment for your background. I really like the custom background option, as sometimes your backstory fits a certain background but it would make more sense to learn a language instead of a second tool proficiency. However, it's really annoying having to pick the base background, choose my starting equipment, then go back and remake the custom background. If a third option for "Background Equipment" could be added, it would make things a lot smoother. I'm honestly surprised this isn't already an option. I can't imagine it would be much more complicated than the other options for a custom background.
tldr; Please add a "Background Equipment" option to custom backgrounds in the character builder.
I second this. It is somewhat annoying, especially the one time I only used custom background to be able to change the language granted by the background away from one I got from race.
I would like this as well I would also like them to add the pouch they keep forgetting when a background gives you say a pouch with 10 gold, and a quiver with you get a bow with a quiver of 20 arrows. I always have to add those.
It would certainly be useful to have this. One workaround that I've used, is to first pick the "official" background, select the equipment and then customize the background.

It's because you can't customize the equipment related to a background and be within the rules. There's no way to do it without it being homebrew. Read the paragraph again, you either get a defined list of equipment or you get none and use gold to buy your own (with only the first option available for AL). But when it comes to homebrew, yes, you can add whatever equipment you want to a homebrew background, it just takes a little work...you just need to make sure you're using the 'and' and 'or' properly and make sure your spelling the name of the items correctly.
We're not asking to customize the starting equipment. We're saying that the additional starting equipment for a customized background doesn't appear in the equipment section of the character builder.
For example, for the entertainer background, you get among other things, a pouch with 15 gold. However if you go with a custom entertainer background, that doesn't show up in starting equipment. You literally, as was said above, have to "pick the base background, choose my starting equipment, then go back and remake the custom background."

Would be nice to have. I typically end up just adding the items in manually rather than switching back and forth between the custom and preset.
