So I recently switched from Fantasy Grounds to Roll20 and licensed CoS there. As well as it coming in my legendary bundle.
Last night I ran an online game of CoS with Roll20 on one screen and Beyond in another. What follows are my thoughts and feedback.
D&D Beyond made it amazingly easy to run an online game, I could scroll silently, none of my players could tell I was hunting for information I love this.
Licensing CoS in both roll20 and Beyond was a huge blessing. Roll20 allowed me to keep the maps and details together while Beyond let me look up stats and rooms at the click of a button. Right-click a monster link into a new tab and boom, got everything I need.
Where Beyond failed me was in the search. We were running the Death House and the book mentions something about the mist powers and gives me a chapter to look in, but no link directly to it. So I decided to do a quick search for Strahd Mist and it gave me page after page of information with those two words, but nothing relevant to the rules. I tried several other searches and could come up with nothing. I was pushing the limit on how long I was comfortable spending away from my players attention, so I had to abandon it and move on. Luckily the players didn't push their luck against the mist. Having gone back this morning I was able to come up with a search that got me close, but if it says see "Chapter 2: The Lands of Barovia" Why not just make that a link directly to that section? It would be very helpful
Over all I think it was one of my best online sessions yet and believe that Beyond is going to be a powerful tool in my DM arsenal. My next in person game is in October, so I will have to wait until then to see how it works on a tablet.
