Currently as it stands Eldritch Invocations are locked at whatever level they are obtained with no wiggle room. This works counter-productive as Warlock's can change invocations upon level up so a Level 9 Warlock is able to override his level 2 Invocations with Level 9 variants and unfortunately that feature to swap invocations like that does not exist
I just created an NPC for a twitch game being a sub to someone's channel and to make things easier wanted to make them here on DND Beyond ahead of time and to my surprise I couldn't take the Invocations I wanted being a Fighter-2/Warlock-9 Bladelock even though The character itself had access to the invocations The menus themselves would not allow me to select anything differently. What they should do is generally make all invocations available to all slots and simply not show the ones they do not have access to at that time of the character creation or show the prerequisites when you select an invocation because even though my character was a Pact of the Blade It showed me Invocations for Pact of the Chain and Pact of the Tome as well even though my character is obviously not eligible for those Invocations.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm going to be switching an invocation out next level and now I won't spend hours looking for a feature that isn't there.
