It's not an area that I am inspired to homebrew, but maybe I will be after I see what others have come up with. What are some of your favorite homebrew backgrounds? (Link to dmsguild if it's there, please!)
The changelog (http://www.dndbeyond.com/changelog) includes a (welcome) tutorial with screenshots and includes this tidbit in the final paragraph, "For a little insight into what we're still working on for homebrew. Next up will be homebrew feats, then races/sub-races, and then sub-classes. Along the way, we will also be adding comments to all published homebrew data. Updating forms to allow users that have access to licensed material the ability to use those as creation templates, or add links to them (like adding a PHB spell to their Homebrew magic item). And finally, addressing the issue with the Ammunition types in magic items." I am particularly excited about being able to use all the content I've purchased as templates for homebrew. Although it is curious that I can't just use any background as a template for a homebrew background even though I have the legendary bundle. I was thinking with this coming down that maybe it would start there. Still very excited!

Thanks I would have missed it if you didn't post this. I'm working on an Al-Qadim 5E campaign and I've been converting the some of the character kits to backgrounds. This is good timing.
When you create one you can only select (Use an existing background as a template) from the basic rules, not the backgrounds we have from unlocked in content
Is this per design or an error, or maybe something first changed later?
If it helps i have Legendary Bundle + pre-ordered Xanathar's Guide to Everything

For whatever reason, you're currently only able to use free content as templates for homebrew content.
