I'm sure this has probably been discussed to death somewhere on the forum but for the life of me I can't find it so I'll make a post and let someone tell me I'm wrong and who will hopefully be kind enough to share a link.
That being said, firearms per the DMG are Martial Ranged Weapons. However, since they are an optional rule and requires separate proficiency (in some cases) we have them classified as their own weapon group. Okay, cool I can get behind that to a point. But what about settings where firearms are more common? Or classes that can use certain abilities with martial weapons? By RAW firearms qualify but through DnDB they aren't options.
Would it be possible to include a toggle in the character creation Home screen for "Firearms count as Martial Weapons"?
go to their character sheet and give the the "firearms" weapon proficiency that is provided as a weapon proficiency if you want them to have it. Since fire arms are optional rules, it is not as simple a just checking a box to make them martial weapons. on DDB they have their own set of proficiencies
I am aware of this. However since they are counted separately from martial weapons in DnDB they are not options for class abilities that function using martial weapons such as a Kensei's weapon choice.
However, since the ARE Martial weapons by RAW having an optional toggle for them to count as martial weapons would allow them to function with those abilities.

even easier:
