Hello! Recently, I have been attempting to add a homebrew subclass to DND Beyond. However, after I type in the name and the description and click "Create Subclass," it leads me to an internal server error notification (with a zombie beholder illustration).
I am able to make non-subclass homebrew on DND Beyond. I have specifically been attempting to add a legacy rogue subclass, but this appears to be a homogeneous problem across all class homebrew content (legacy and non-legacy).

Not a guaranteed solution, but I've found some luck by creating from a duplicated subclass instead of a fresh one. Maybe back out after creating and reopen from your homebrew creations if it doesn't cooperate.
Unfortunately it seems as if creating an custom subclass from scratch is no longer an option, and having to use a template is not the best way to backend the ability.
Welp, guess a toggle is too much work, ….

It's not a simple toggle. This is deeper than that for sure, something they tried to update broke the system. This seems to have happened around the same time the erroneously shown "Create Class" button disappeared.
Might have been replaced by 2024 subclass creation given the ASI and feat combination.
With the SRD fixing to be released, this doesn’t surprise one to think the toggle was a not going to happen, time to switch as the decommissioning will soon begin.

2014 subclass creation will remain available by all indications. There's been nothing saying that was being taken away in any capacity whatsoever.
Not lately. Try making just a custom subclass from scratch for a 2014 legacy class, not choosing a a subclass template and the brewer just crops up the unable beholder.
Now, unless you choose a subclass template, or make the subclass for 2024, the brewer won’t let you create a non-preprogrammed subclass for legacy classes.
Only reason why is the change in ‘24 that all classes get their subclass at Lv3, as in ‘14 you had a number of classes that would allow 1st level subclass choice.( Cleric, Paladin, Warlock, etc.
having to maintain two separate brewers for subclassing the ones that could be 1st or 3rd lvl for legacy probably creates a issue that would allow ‘24 classes to have subs that could bypass the 3rd lvl or higher prerequisites, and allow for 1st lvl subclass creation.
Just because they said they would maintain some of the former functionality, doesn’t mean they can’t just change it so that it now has to function solely for the newer classes and slowly phase out the older tools.
The slow transition and transformation of a good number of the former 2014 tools have been getting the 2024 updates, and while it might not look like much hasn’t really changed, it’s starting to become more noticeable.
The site, even though it is now owned by WotC is still under the assumption that new content has to replace the old, but in reality it could have still hosted the former content, and could have provided the same functionality as other sites, multi edition/versions of D&D. But not anymore, it’s full on switch or have nothing more than reference content, and little way to utilize it in the brewers.

Your point falls apart quite easily when you consider that the 2024 classes' homebrew subclasses are just as broken as the 2014. It's not specific to one side or the other, it's all.
The point no longer matters. Before the site was acquired by the company that owns the brand rights, the homebrew tools had been designed to accommodate the 2014 rules and limited as it was, allowed for custom sub-class creation without the need for selecting a previous created sub-class as a template for the creation of a new sub-class.
The brand owners bought the site, and instead of providing an official site that would allow the creation of content for different versions of/editions of the D&D, like other places have seemed to figure out, the move was to continue the ways of the old agreement of when just newer content was produced that is the only content that should be available.
The point is, they could have made tools specifically for 2024, and left the 2014 tools well enough alone to not only serve as a way to understand how it was done, but to aid in developing and refining the tools for the newer content.
If the functionality of the former tools had not been degraded, maybe 2024 would have been better.
But many understand that sooner or later the old tools and homebrew creation rules are going to be discontinued. The new question is how much longer will the older homebrewed created material still be supported considering that the tools to make such will be eventually be no longer available, and the conversion of such is to be “forward” compatible not “backwards”?

2024 and 2014 homebrew have both been supported simultaneously since the day the 2024 PHB came out. You don't have a point here because this isn't a design choice, it's blatantly a bug made by recent work on the site.
The ability to create homebrew sub-classes for 2014 without needing a template to do so began when UA playtesting for 2024 began.
The first problems was having to resync licenses, and then when the legacy tags started to be placed on materials that where getting upgraded to what was to be the new rules systems, the difference between how sub-class design from 2014 and 2024 started popping up.
Support for 2014 will eventually be ended, and if the signs of that happening are rapidly approaching, people need to start getting ready for the inevitable.
Backdoor hacks are only a temporary solution to an unneeded problem.

Well, I used the template, replaced the name and abilities, and it worked just fine. The "make from scratch" feature just appears to be a bug.
Thank you for your help, Athanar90!
Just an additional note to consider: From experimentation, some people here in the forums are finding that some subclasses work better/are more stable than others for this purpose. If you need to do this again and one fails, try another.
This was the 2014 homebrew sub-class guide and the linked tutorial guide by hartless showed how the ability to create non templated sub-classes was achieved.
and here is a thread that points to the other homebrew 2014 tools and guides.
The fact that 2024 changes some of the foundational aspects of the core classes means the 2014 old sub-class tools are going to be changed to accommodate the new classes, and the ability to create custom sub-classes from scratch will be lost.
The button to create a non template sub-class still exists and works, but it goes nowhere after you click the create sub-class button when in the actual initial sub-class creation process.
If the ability to create a non template sub-class is no longer available, how much longer will 2014 templates be supported considering that 2024 class templates have changed enough to warrant the discontinuation of custom 2014 sub-classes without the need for a previous template to be needed?
If 2014 is to continue to be supported, they why was the support for custom sub-class building without a template before been dropped without disabling the button?
( probably because the custom sub-class w/o temp is possible for only the 2024 versions of the rules perhaps? )
Hell, I’d be surprised if 6 months from now anything 2014 will still have any type of custom creation w/o some form of a template needed in the homebrew creation tools, or even be still supported.
Sure you can use workarounds to get there, but how long before those paths become unworkable?
" Darkvision doesn’t work in Magical darkness, and if something is magical, Never Trust it acts the same way as a non-magical version of that same thing!”- Discotech Mage over a cup of joe.
-Why would both have worked until just within the last week? -Why was the option to create subclasses from scratch usable until this last week for both sets of classes? (That tutorial, from back in 2018, shows creation from scratch was achieved way back then; this was still the case until this last week.) -Why would the 2024 creation from scratch be broken now?
It's a bug. Just stop, you're embarassing yourself.
Not a bug, cause if it was, it would have been fixed by now. The ability to create a non template homebrew has been slowly eroded ever since they began the site maintenance process, which started back in July-August 2024 just before the 24 presale release, and some aspects of the builder had started having users give them trouble with non templated custom building as soon as the beginning of the year.
( the bugs and support forum isn’t the only place where this has occurred, but as stated before the solution was always just a quick workaround. The actual ability to create a non template custom sub-class as being completely broken is just now getting the attention it needed months, if not a full year ago. )
It’s been awhile since the halt was made to allow 2014 to wrap up, and I do believe they are shutting down the offering of 2014 creation in favor of 2024.
You can still use templates, but from scratch it looks as though that from scratch option is no longer going to be available.
Unless they are working on improving it, but then why not state it’s undergoing fixes to improve it? Or is it just slowly being phased out because the relative use of the old tools is beginning to cost more to host than the number of people that actually know or even use the tools to create unique content?
" Darkvision doesn’t work in Magical darkness, and if something is magical, Never Trust it acts the same way as a non-magical version of that same thing!”- Discotech Mage over a cup of joe.
A: The Beyond team are horrible about actual communication with the community, which has been a consistent thorn in the sides of everyone around B: Bugfixes are slow to get rolled out and they don't consider the ability to create homebrew a critical system, so no, there's no reason to believe they'd have it fixed by now
I still use that functionality of the 2014 rules to theory-craft sub-class custom builds, and if that ability is now no longer supported?, what then?
it would be better heard from by a moderator than by anyone, even us vets, as what whatever is going on, but till such time, just looking at how progressive the “patch or workaround” has been it’s no surprise that a bug, would be pushed possibly to the end of the need to fix tickets.
( meanwhile, while in “patch” limbo, the decision to drop support for “updates” is to end support, which makes addressing those “support ‘tickets’” a inherently difficult decision: hook and drag, or catch and release? While both can be used quickly, we know it’s most probably a slow 50/50 on both, and the timeout in the tickets will likely be addressed in typical auto-generated responses. Till the massive number of complaints starts to draw attention, and the get out in front of the speeding nearly in front of them bus PR team suddenly appears. [ and people wonder why it turns out such a wreck.])
TL;DR if this is just a bug, what is the expected time it will be addressed and potentially fixed?
