The method descibed in the DMG for building an encounter yields entirely different results than results from using the Enconuter Builder tool on DnDB. Which is correct? Why don't they match? There is a banner that says that the Maps tool uses updated calculations, but there are no calculations in the Maps tool. Thoroughly confused - please help
Are you comparing the right encounter builder to the right Dungeon Master's Guide? The dedicated encounter builder uses the 2014 DMG and associated encounter building rules which features a modifier based on the number of monsters. The encounter builder integrated to Maps uses the 2024 DMG and that versions of the encounter building rules which omits the monster count modifier and also has different tiers of difficulty.
I've got Maps pulled up and it seems correct to me. I have five level 8 PCs, which gives an XP Budget of 5,000 for Low difficulty, 8,500 for Moderate, and 10,500 for high. If I'm using allips for the encounter with 1,800xp each, I'd expect 1 to 2 to be Low, 3 to 4 to be Moderate, and more than 4 to be High.
This is exactly what I see.
Could it be you're changing the monsters and it's not updating? There is an issue where it only recalculates if you "delete" the encounter and re-add everything which is a huge pain. But it does seem the math is mathing

Yep that was it. I needed to start the encounter over from scratch after messing with stuff. I appreciate the insight! Thank you so much!
Very happy to help
