Hi everyone. We grew up on AD&D years ago. We prefer the older, weaker type of characters vs the more powerful 5e characters. The character sheet in D&D Beyond is fantastic with integration into the 5e game. Because it's so good, we've been trying to shoehorn the character sheet to fit an AD&D character. Through homebrew, we've figured out a lot to make this work. However, the big obstacle we've encountered is how to adjust the ability modifiers based upon the ability score. We know how to homebrew the adjustments to ability scores, we are not trying to do that.
For example, an 18 score in Strength in 5e has a modifier of +4. in AD&D it's a +1, +2. We want to keep the 18 ability score but reduce the modifier accordingly. So far, we've not had any luck with this. Is the modifier independently adjustable? If so, how? Thanks a lot for the assistance!
Yes, on the character sheet, click on Strength and the right panel will appear. Click Customize and enter negative values in Override Modifier. The strength will remain at 18 but will have values subtracted.
Hi Rynegade. Thanks for the input. I do get the window that appears on the right when I click on Strength, but I don't have a customize option. There are option for "Other Modifier" and "Override Score" but both of those just adjust the ability score not the modifier. What your describing is exactly what I am looking for. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks
I am thinking skill checks, such as to hit modifiers, not saving throws. We've developed a homebrew workaround by creating a magic ring for all the characters that gives negative modifiers to align with the AD&D modifiers, and that works great. But it would be a lot easier to adjust the modifiers without the rings! Are those ability modifiers hard coded and not customizable at all? I know most people are looking for ways to make their character stronger, not weaker like we are! ha Thanks

What would be considered a "other modifier"?
When do I add somthing into the "other modifier" slot?
if something else caused a change to your ability score like a spell, curse or boon
