I wanted to import my Kor Gunslinger and came to find that homebrew content is locked behind a subscription. Custom community built content is behind a money subscription.

It's not a class/service created or managed by d&d beyond in any way, shape or form. I don't get why such a feature is locked behind a subscription. Also, why is things such as Drow from the player's handbook not included in the races section? I've been an avid dungeon's and dragon's player for the longest time and just recently got into critical role and been enjoying the streams which led me to this site for the hell of it, immediately turned off.
You have an extremely approachable website and well developed community that in my opinion would immediately scare away a ton of potential customers/members. I can understand the creation of such content as subscription only just to clear up the fodder as well as community managed homebrew content but why behind a sub? It just doesn't add up to me, is this something old that is going to be replaced sometime?
Why would I go here over the 2-3 other websites that offer the same content but for free?
The Homebrew Listing is indeed something the Curse is managing in all the ways, shapes and forms: from the initial development to updates and bug corrections, from moderation to storage service.
Also, a user needs a subscription only to copy a homebrew creation into its account. A free user can at any time create and publish homebrew.
I will tackle your second issue first. Access to everything in the SRD is totally free. Drow are in the Players Handbook, but not in the SRD. So to get access to that race, you would need to go to the Marketplace tab above and see several different options for purchases there.
Homebrew creation is totally free. Currently, you can create monsters, spells, magic items, backgrounds, feats, and races. Homebrew subclasses are not far off the horizon. Homebrew classes are something the Curse team has said they have no current plans to do because of the complexity and wide-openness of the possibilities. But the team has also been pretty responsive to the community. Provided your creations don't violate copyright or site guidelines, you can share them with the community. To access this published homebrew requires a subscription.
Since I don't work for Curse, I am not qualified to speculate as to their reasons for this set up. But it seems to me that all of this homebrew content has to be curated and stored digitally. That must cost them some amount. The options you put forward are that subscriptions either be on the creation end or the access end. I'd wager that many more folks create homebrew than need access to it. To have to pay to homebrew material would be much more limiting than to pay to access it because all of those people would be required to have a subscription under your plan.
