It's not just the spells themselves though, anything that references or grants a spell will be switched to the new rules. To continue using the 2014 rules going forward
- every subclass that grants spells needs to be homebrewed
- every item that grants spells needs to be homebrewed
- every warlock invocation that grants spells - these *cannot* be homebrewed and will not be usable with 2014 rules
- every class that grants extra spells (mainly through the Tashas expanded spell lists) - as far as I know these also *cannot* be homebrewed so will be unusable.
- every monster that casts spells will need to be homebrewed
I'm sure there'll be more as we think things through over the weekend, but this is much more than just copying the spells, to the point that I don't see any way to use the 2014 rules on DnDBeyond going forward.
5 years of master tier and you take away the things I've been paying to access? All you had to do was toggle between the two versions, Im sure some 12yr old kid on reddit could show you how to do the programing. WotC had good will, and a fan base that was solid. Then you OGL, hire hit men, and now you delete content we paid for and force us to use new stuff against our will and have the nerve to ask us to pay for the privilege to be treated like that?
Im sad for the game, but I hope your executives loot your coffers and the enablers inside the company get treated like the customers. Raise the flag.
I think you acknowledged this in your second reply, but I just want to make it clear for anyone else reading as I've seen this point made a few times today.
As far as I'm aware functionality has always *specifically* been at least part of what you are purchasing. It has never been the case that you are just buying compendium content, with functionality as a freebie. On the old store you could chose to buy the functionality separately to the compendium itself. The current marketplace specifically states that you're buying the compendium content *and* the character builder functionality.
I have been subscribed for years including a year I didn’t even play once because I wanted my group to keep the streamlined tools and accessibility. Sounds like I will be forced to do it on paper to continue my campaign, so when that happens there will be literally no reason for me to keep the already rather ridiculous subscription. If you keep it easy to use old rules, I’ll of course stay subscribed. But sounds like that’s not what’s happening. Say hi to the titanic on your way down
Agreed, and adding to your point I'm certain that there are those who purchased things on the storefront solely for access to the functionality. I'm one of them! I would not have bought a single book on DnDbeyond if I only wanted compendium access. The sole reason I purchased books on here was to buy access to the character builder.
So I paid for the (digital) books and I am paying for the subscription to be able to use them easily accessible, online. Now you are removing that option and replace the spells from the books I bought with some other garbage so the two don't fit together anymore?
They'd better walk this back or my subscription is canceled, and my 3 campaigns are rolling out that door.
Better yet, cancel your auto-renew now. You won't lose access for the time you've already paid for.
When you cancel it asks why you're cancelling and they can go to their bosses with "we've had X cancellations because of this in 2 days" - if they reverse, you can always choose to resubscribe if you want.
Removing content I paid for, thanks D&D Beyond, now I feel better about unsubscribing. When will companies listen to their customers?
Yes I get it, profits are king, but you can’t profit if you alienate your customers. Keep 2014 as legacy, people will move over eventually, but forcing them too is not building a good brand.
Either way, I’m out, I’m going to go play Harnmaster.
Whether they walk it back or not, I have already cancelled. I will consider re-subbing IF they walk this back, apologize for being numb to their community's needs, AND guarantee that we'll retain access to the functionality that we've paid for for years. ... I will consider... but man, they're making it hard to have faith in this company.
I have also noticed a LARGE number of people here who have posted once or twice (or, like me.. 4 times, now!) just to come here and tell the devs how very stupid this decision is. Seriously, please listen to us. Many of us would like an excuse to stay, but I will NOT be purchasing the 2024 books in the near future - first, I have invested over $1000 in the old books - second, I simply cannot afford to buy any new books - but I CAN manage $54 per year to keep access to the lovely tools that let me USE those books.
..but... well, I guess I don't need to worry about that $54 anymore.
I would like to voice my support on this topic. Just killing off the 2014 content is ridiculous. It is idiotic/lazy choices like this that make me question staying with D&D Beyond. Other services like Roll20 clearly listen to the customers and are ready to pickup the pieces.
I want my ******* money back, I bought the digital books EXPLICITLY so my players could use the content in their sheets. Shove your 5.5e and its boring ass patch note changes, I paid money I want my content!
I am genuinely contacting my bank and having them do a chargeback on every purchase I've made on DnDBeyond since my purchases are being gutted. I also won't be making any new purchases on this garbage website since I doubt that the new 2024 content will even fully work (Looking at you Tasha's subclasses that were still never fully implemented 3 years later despite paying for the book).
And here I thought WotC couldn't **** up any more than they already had.
After feeling extremely anxious and angry the last few days, I've finally decided to cancel my auto resub to my master tier. It was actually going to resub in september, but I don't think this site deserves my money when clearly their players' opinions mean absolutely NOTHING to them.
Implement a ruleset toggle. Let us make our character sheets based on 2014 rules OR 2024 rules. One entirely overwriting the other is unacceptable. I would have been willing to slowly dip my toes into the new rules and see what I like, but everything I enjoyed being ripped away makes me want to just throw it all out
They expect us to spend money and continue paying for their products when they clearly aren't even going to continue supporting it in the future.
And to anyone that's trying to say 'But they've ALWAYS overwritten things with updates !' no. this isn't the same. This is a blanket update of both rulesets, classes, subclasses, races and subraces, spells and magic items. They were able to put in 2014 classes and subclasses as legacy content along with the races and subraces. I don't see why they can't do that with magic items and spells.
And let us toggle the actual ruleset. Because for example, I don't care for the exhaustion updates. The fact we simply don't even have an OPTION on what we see on our sheets is insane.
We all spent money, time and love building our 5e characters, spent years on this site supporting it and WOTC. Ongoing campaigns are going to be majorly disrupted by this. Ongoing characters are going to be majorly disrupted by this. Even future characters, of people that spent a lot of money and time, who simply wanted to continue playing 5th edition, will be heavily disrupted.
And to tell us to 'just homebrew it' is an insult to be quite honest. The homebrew system is barely usable at best and they want each and every one of us to mass copy all of the magic items and spells now ? But even then, our character sheets willy be altered, what if the spells and items don't even fit anymore.
This is frustrating. And I usually wouldn't rant in such a crude manner but I'm just genuinely upset.
Please WOTC, roll this back. Support BOTH versions.
I’ve been subscribed for 5 or so years and today I cancelled my subscription over this slap in the face. If I had purchased anything in the last 6 months, I would be filing a chargeback with my credit card company, but most of my purchases are 3-5 years old. I also believe that those of us who made purchases before DNDBeyond was sold to WOTC, we agreed to terms of service. Shame on Hasbro and WOTC!
…Okay, I'm gonna be honest… they're clearly getting ready for a new edition, and changing everything so that new Players can easily transition into the new edition… if you want, yes you can homebrew all your stuff so you can keep your 5e stuff…
You really don't HAVE to mountain outta a mole hill this situation.
If you don't wanna use 6e, then you'll likely have to make like those who didn't wanna do 5e and either homebrew or use other sites… simple.
I'm saying this because… I get canceling your subscription… but does EVERYONE have to announce it?
I'm keeping mine until it actually screws with everything I've got…
If it's supposed to be a new edition and replacement for 5e then that's what they should have told us. Instead they've repeated insisted that it's not a new edition, it's not errata, and it's backwards compatible so you can continue using 2014 rules.
The best thing they could do now is admit that they lied, and that 5e is dead. At least then we could all close our accounts and move on.
According to this list there's at least 110 spells that are changed, and they say their list is incomplete.

For those that haven't seen yet, this seems to be their response. A clarification, no changes to their plans.
