"We effed up, we're delaying the books releases to add legacy toggles, Blackrock be banished to Baator, thank you, goodnight" is what's needed as a response.
Do NOT force these things. It is TERRIBLE from a macroperspective PoV regarding everything from PR to customer choice, & it is ENTIRELY the result of investors controlling the company and the economy.
A class-action lawsuit against Blackrock, The Vanguard Group, Charles Schwab, and other boomer money investment firms by most of the world needs to happen sooner rather than later.
If their fingers are in an investor/share/stockholder pie, it's why good things go to crap.
You're not going to wear down people to accept anything less than what they want, similar to last time. Malicious over-correction will not work.
Also, to the people who file things in California:Hasbro is in Washington state, not California. Just a heads up for your filings.

I completely agree with this. I have no intention to buy the 2024 products. By changing the links, you are basically putting the products I’ve bought from you in the bin, and breaking all the character sheets in my campaign.
Unless of course, I put in the work to basically homebrew a new version of every spell in the game. It’s an outrageous way to treat customers who have bought products from you. I should not have to homebrew to continue to use a product I have bought from you with no changes.
it feels like a clumsy attempt to coerce me to buy the 2024 rules in order to continue my campaign. If I have to buy something to continue my campaign, I would rather buy the 2014 products again on ROLL20 and cancel my subscription with you.
Sooo that's it for me. I will be switching back to the dark eye 5E and Myranor 5E (a German system) and won't look back to WotC and Hasbro.
Unsub the master tier and as for a few parting words:
Sagt mal hat man euch den Arsch soweit aufgerissen das ihr mir vier Backen klatscht? So verliert ihr die deutsche Community auf jeden Fall - die Macher von DSA schlafen nicht und publizieren inzwischen auch auf Englisch .... Nur so nebenbei .
Zu guter Letzt zitiere ich den Ritter mit der Eisenfaust: Sagt dem Kaiser er kann mich im Arsche lecken.
So long and thank you for the fish.

Unacceptable! Somebody is going to do D&D beyond better and than you’ll be worth nothing if you continue this hostile move… retain the legacy version of items and spells. You are just alienating your playerbase
I agree. I will be canceling my subscription and only buy used physical books from now on if this idiotic decision isn't reversed by my renewal date. Hasbro is going to alienate their customer base further and further and kill DnD at this rate. There's always Pathfinder, Daggerheart, etc.
Well my master tier is stopped and I'm gonna get my hands on some used books or something like that. I had most of the wotc books on here but apparently that's not wort a damn to them.
I came in here to say exactly what everybody else in this thread is saying. If DDB actually goes forward with completely removing the 2014 magic items and spells, instead of just marking them as Legacy, and allowing some sort of toggle to play with the old content, I will be canceling my Master subscription.
Nothing says "backwards compatible," which is what we were all repeatedly told the new ruleset would be, like saying: "you can't play with the old stuff." Ridiculous.
Joining all the voices here to add that if this goes through I'll be cancelling my subscription. My table plays 2014 rules, and will continue to play 2014 rules. So if we can no longer access all of the 2014 rules easily on your platform, what am I even doing here?
Does this mean I'll lose access to the "legacy" spells I already purchased? I'm in the middle of a campaign with six players and dozens of NPCs whose abilities are all going to effectively change overnight? Between this and getting rid of a la carte, what am I even doing on dndbeyond? I'll be switching to paper and pencil, thanks.
This is such bullshit. It essentially wipes all of our purchased 5e content to force another upgraded purchase. What a classless, greedy, disrespectful move by Hasbro. I am so done with everything D&DB and New edition after being a player, DM, and big time purchaser for years. Of course, they COULD keep the 5e as an option. What about the recent 5e deals with 3rd parties like Kobold Press? What a horrible move. Wizards does not work in good faith.
I am also pretty upset about this! I paid for access to content from those specific books, not content from dnd 2024? I don't want my characters to be changed, I want them to be able to function as they did when I made them.
I'm a professional software developer. I guarantee you that all this content is in a database, and switching between it is as simple as adding a data field for version (2014 or 2024) and then giving each account a switch to choose which version gets loaded. That's all it is. Cancel your renewal; it's the only thing they understand.
I am definitely at the very least downgrading my subscription in response to this, and several people I know are considering cancelling-- because what is the point of this platform if we don't have a stable host for our character sheets???
For someone who owns content for let’s say a vorpal blade (pretend it got updated), will they automatically get the updated vorpal blade or would they have to buy it again?
Agree with everyone that this is absolutely unacceptable!
It's also completely avoidable.
DnDBeyond should update the site so spells, magic items, conditions, and whatever else can be given a legacy badge. If it is difficult, then you should do it anyway in whatever time frame you can manage, because (a) people should be able to use what they paid for if they don't want to switch editions and (b) even in the case of people who are switching, backwards compatibility was promised: that means if someone want to use an older version of anything, they should be able to. I knew you were going to have trouble fulfilling the promise of backwards compatibility the moment it was claimed, but you did that. Now you need to honour it.
If it will take a while to fix properly, in the short term surely you can make a second copy of each spell and item and add "(2014)" to its name. We can then self-select the version approved for our campaigns.
Well, this is a well-thought out and well-communicated decision that won’t have any repercussions.
I’ve been subbed at master level for 6 years now. I’ve run several campaigns through DnDB, and am in the middle of one now. Forcibly changing systems mid-game - that the spells and items and rules may not behave as expected, that I’ll have to pause the game and check - is a deeply irritating proposal. I’m not averse to 2024 rules, I’d planned to keep buying new books and to make the switch at the end of my current campaign. Now? Now I’m inclined to listen to my player who keeps agitating for Pathfinder.
If I’m going to have to do all that homebrew work to keep playing the game I’m currently playing, why on earth would I pay for DnDB? Foundry’s not difficult to set up.

Suddenly, having all the books in hard copy is so much more rewarding.
I agree. I will be canceling my subscription and only buy used physical books from now on if this idiotic decision isn't reversed by my renewal date. Hasbro is going to alienate their customer base further and further and kill DnD at this rate. There's always Pathfinder, Daggerheart, etc.
I'm furious as a master tier subscriber I am being forced into using the new edition.
Neither me nor my players are ready to make the move yet.
I have spend hundereds of pounds on 5e products on this site.
The way this has been done feels like little more than a money grab and is beyond disrespectful.
So now, in order to continue to play the game I and my players love, I either have to pay out a small fortune or homebrew over 200 spells?
HOW can they justify this???
Well my master tier is stopped and I'm gonna get my hands on some used books or something like that. I had most of the wotc books on here but apparently that's not wort a damn to them.
Not going with this shitshow anymore.

Why do this when they can create a false urgency for players and sell them new content?
This plus the a la carte purchases being removed has finally led me to cancel my subscription and seek out alternatives.
Don't wait. Cancel your renewal now. They'll only respond to the financial pressure from seeing people flee the site.
I am also pretty upset about this! I paid for access to content from those specific books, not content from dnd 2024? I don't want my characters to be changed, I want them to be able to function as they did when I made them.
