Imagine a campaign where you and your party worked as a small unit that carried out precise attacks and missions during an ongoing war. Maybe you belonged to a mercenary army or just one of the warring parties. This could include espionage, spy work, night time raids, prison breaks and assassinations. Now what’s your perfect party composition?Lets say 5 players and a sixth man for fun.
Im going Gloomstalker revised ranger and Twilight Cleric for the dark vision and initiative. Shadow Sorcerer for the subtle spell and because they’re the best save or suck class. Then I’ll take a Circle of the Moon Druid because wild shape will be amazing for utility. Next I want a Path of the Beast Barbarian as the muscle, not a lot of synergy for special operations but the climb speed etc will help them from falling behind. Now, I really can’t decide if I want an Assassin or Thief rogue for the 6th man, but I’m gonna cheat cause I’m making the rules and take both.
Any other ideas? Perfect party compositions? I’ve been really interested in this for the past week.
1 battlesmith artificer, your explosives and entry dude 1 undead warlock 17/echo knight fighter 3, area lockdown and suppression (think like a machine gun) 1 gloomstalker 5/assassin X/battlemaster 3/life cleric 1, single target shutdown, force multiplication (via stealth) and pick ups
1 artificer 1/War wizard 19, toolbox support and control
Take a look at real spec ops teams - 5 to 10 members in an “A” team, all cross trained in at least one other area. So a 4 man party isn’t really cutting it, you’re sure to have holes. Probably a 6 man team is best.- enough members to cover everything and not so many as to be stumbling over each other. All multiclasses with ranger being one of the classes in most cases. Also, level 8 to give multiclasses both a subclass and martial classes a second attack. So: 1) halfling scout rogue 3/ barbarian 5 2) high elf bladesinger Wizard 8 ( the only non multiclass as it doesn’t need to be). 3) Dwarven Glory Paladin 5/ Life Cleric 3 4) Human Battlemaster Fighter 5/Lore Bard 3 5) Gnome Gloomstalker Ranger 5/ Moon Druid 3 6) Amethyst Dragonborn Fey Wander Ranger 5/ Draconic() Sorceror 3
First off, love your concept, i did mine as a four man because that is a fairly average table size, and while sure i scaled them to 20, each build can be stripped back to viable at 1-20
A key answer is are you hitting all of the requirements. Silent communication/movement/entrance/exit, doing enough (fast/high) damage if compromised, be able to complete the actual purpose and lastly be able to be extracted.

What level are the party?
For level, to make it fun, go with starting a campaign at level 7 and it running 15-20.
That’s my idea of Force Grey, but don’t think classes really matter...still just whatever the players want to play.
