Since the hover message says "Click to like this", then nobody is going to use it as a thank button unless they know it appears on a profile page under a section labelled "X Thanks".
I've just been using it to like posts (like ALL the other forums on the internet).
Same here. I use it mostly when I strongly agree with someone, a post is funny or someone makes a point and I don't feel like it's worth my time to entangle myself in a long and stressful discussion, so the least I could do is show my support to someone whose line of thinking is similar to mine and has the will and energy to argue.
