Hi everyone. I have a level 18 NPC spellcaster who I have placed in a cabin in a swamp. I want to have them create a magical barrier that surrounds the cabin and some of the land around it on all sides. Is there anything like that? If not how might I go about home brewing that?
All stars fade. Some stars forever fall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homebrew (Mostly Outdated):Magic Items,Monsters,Spells,Subclasses ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If there was no light, people wouldn't fear the dark.
There are some spells that produce very large areas of protection, but it varies.
Spells like Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum can be as big as 100x100 feet and have an in-game statistics for having one permanently installed in an area. It's a 4th level spell, so an 18th level caster could easily cast the spell multiple times to cover a wider area if they want. However, the spell doesn't offer much in the way of "protection"... it more just provides privacy and prevents scrying/teleportation in the area.
Hallow covers a smaller area and is mostly a Cleric spell, but provides even more protection, and can be designed to only affect certain creature types.
The best ways to give a barrier hit points would be to either give it an accessible power source that can be struck, (E.g. destroy 3 of 6 arcane pylons), or to make the "barrier" less literal, and have the cabin guarded by monsters.
Whether a stone wall, or a mobile mass of teeth and claws, the party will need to spend time making a hole in order to pass. If they try to avoid the monsters, then they may find themselves surrounded when they arrive at the cabin, which may end up being worse.
You can also treat the NPC as a legendary monster, and give it regional effects and lair actions. Take a look at the regional/lair details for Green/Black dragons.

It's called a Plot Device. You don't need a technical explanation, because it's your world.
I have a weird sense of humor.
I also make maps.(That's a link)
Maybe homebrew a larger version of wall of force?

+1 for plot device. If in doubt, just say that the location is on an intersection of Ley Lines that allows for such kinds of immovable potent magics.
Hallucinatory Terrain is also a good option. Just make the target zone appear inaccessible.
Seems like a wish spell would do the trick.
Thanks! I wasn't very clear. I was mostly trying to figure out how to give the barrier hit points that are reasonable.
I also like the idea of Hallucinatory Terrain.
