Hey all, I'm having trouble planning out level progression for an archery build. I'm going the Arcane Archer route with some dips here and there.
So we started at level 4 this was supposed to be a one off but it's stuck enough the DM is going to keep it going.
I am currently Arcane Archer 3/Hexblade 1. The idea at first because it was a one off, was to have some consistent ranged damage for the group and be a little annoying. I took Grasping Arrow and Shadow Arrow. I use hex on my target and hex their strength so they have disadvantage on strength checks and combine that with Grasping Arrow so the target has a harder time getting rid of the vines potentially wasting multiple turns.
But now that this is on going. I'm not sure if I want to actually have the Hexblade part or not. I eventually plan to be Arcane Archer x/ Gloom Stalker 4/Hexblade?(Maybe) at the very least AA and Gloom Stalker.
I get to use revised ranger. My stats are Str 10, Dex 20, 16 Con, 18 Int, 13 Wis, 16 Cha (I get the opportunity to switch my wis and cha if I choose). I currently shoot with a +9 to hit. Elf(Avariel)
The ideas I've been juggling with in my head are these:
Remove hexblade(at least for now) and make it Ranger so I become Arcane Archer 3/ Ranger 1 - I trade hex+hexblade curse for Favored enemy, some survival stuff advantage on initiative + first turn advantage attacks on creature that haven't acted yet. I then reach the question; what do I take next for lvl 5 and maybe 6? Ranger 2 for Hunter's Mark + Ensnaring Strike, Close-Quarters Shooter fighting style for +1 to hit within 30 ft and 5ft doesn't apply disadvantage into AA 4. Or do I go Arcane Archer 4 for Sharpshooter then go Ranger 2? Progression looks like: AA 3 > Ranger 2 > AA 4 or AA 3 > Ranger 1 > AA 4 > Ranger 2
Or do I just keep my Hexblade and put 1 level into Ranger then into Arcane Archer for Sharpshooter? AA 3 > Hex 1 > Ranger 1 > AA 4 or AA 3 > Hex 1 > AA 4 > Ranger 1
It's a mess I know. Can I get some thoughts and opinions on what would feel the smoothest. The idea behind this character is to hit fast and hard, then to provide consistent damage throughout combat. The plan is to take Sharpshooter, Alert, Elven Accuracy not in any particular order but I feel until I have multiple shots Elven Accuracy isn't as helpful.
Any thoughts are appreciated! Even suggesting something different from what I've said is fine. Thanks!
My personal recommendation would be to get to Fighter 5 as soon as possible. Level 5 in a class typically includes a significant increase in power, which as a Fighter would be Extra Attack for you. Delaying this by 1 level is usually OK but I wouldn't recommend delaying it by 2 or more. Your progression would then be:
If you are thinking of taking Elven Accuracy you may want to also add some levels of Rogue to throw some Sneak Attack damage on top, possibly ending up as Fighter 11/Ranger 4/Rogue 5 with 5 ASIs/Feats or Fighter 12/Ranger 4/Rogue 4 with 6 ASIs/Feats. If you are going to be hunting for advantage you might as well make the most of it!
Yeah, you want Extra Attack and a second Fighting Style a lot more than you want hex and Hexblade's Curse. Switch to fighter 3/ranger 1, go up to ranger 2, then pick which class to put the rest of your levels in.
