So my character is an artificer (at lv3 he is going battlesmith) and I am going for an inventor theme, he is a 3ft tall verdan named gil who has a shop in town where he works on odd tools and makes a living freelancing with other craftsmen around the city which has taught him plenty of skills and helps him make a living as an on demand assistant.
I am focusing his personality as a mix between a more serious good hearted person and a chaotic goblin inventor mixing steampunk with explosives kinda deal.
My DM told me to get rid of all 5 of my skill proficiencies and repick any 5 i wanted so i have options
With that info out of the way I wanted to ask two questions!
1: What 5 do you think would be good? I was thinking arcana for his knowledge of magic items and how to infuse his magic into items to improve them, investigation to study things, perceptions because he is pretty aware and a bit hectic paying too much attention to everything. so this leaves me with 2 more options, any ideas?
2: I am preplanning how i want my steel defender to look later and was thinking two legs and two armed humanoid (hulking monster or sleek human like mannequin that could flavor wise function as an assistant outside of combat), a four legged crab type of machine, or maybe something else idk yet.... any ideas?
Perception and Investigation are both excellent choices, and the party Artificer is usually handed Arcana questions, so well chosen, there. For the remaining two, I would recommend Insight as the social version of Perception, and Religion as the other half of Arcana for knowledge of magic items.
Mechanically, the only question here is what hoops your GM wants to make you jump through to make your defender capable of manual dexterity, and legally able to do things like grapple and operate doorknobs. From an actually cosmetic perspective, the sky's the limit - you're limited to two or four legs, with no listed limit on things like heads, arms, or tentacles. Design whatever you like. The last one I designed had no head in the traditional sense - its body was egg shaped and the top of the egg could rotate and had cameras on it, but the thing had no nose or mouth in any sense. The egg opened to deploy various limbs, including that the bottom could open to deploy four spider-like legs (sadly, a defender can't legally have no legs, or you can bet your booty this guy would have).
Oh that sounds cool! yeah I had a few ideas for it and i either want something very odd that can be mounted if i want or something that could work as a minor assistant flavor wise like I can imagine a feminine mannequin or a monstrous creature handing tools, holding heavy parts, ect while he repairs or makes things lol.
On a side option I like the idea of a large version of the dwemer spiders from the elder scrolls with 4 legs and two pincers, like how the dwemer in morrowind lost the use of his legs so he made a machine that carries him based on those dwemer spiders.
idk he isn't a book worm, I feel a lot of his knowledge in arcana is from understanding his own abilities and experimentation as well as things he had to look into on down time while he has no interest in religion or the gods... in his eyes the gods are pointless to please because we are just ants to them so we should focus on us more than them. I could see insight though, I know we have a cleric, paladin, fighter, and sorcerer in the party which means two charisma and one wisdom class not sure if anyone has insight currently actually. I know we are playing descent into avernus so yeah will keep those two in mind!
