If you're accessing a public character sheet of another user and you're not the DM, you won't be able to roll on that character sheet. The only way to roll on a sheet is to be the DM of the campaign the character is in, or be the owner of the sheet.
Some extensions may modify or affect this, but D&D Beyond doesn't support nor guarantee any functionality of third party extensions.
The only way to run another players character while they're away and make rolls on their sheet is for them to unassign the character, and then for you to claim it

We literally do it every Saturday, there are 9 players in the Saturday night game I run, using Beyond20 plug in and Roll20 in conjunction with DnDBeyond. It is almost a guarantee that 1 player will not attend so another player controls and rolls from their sheet. I am in work so can't do a screenshot but will do one tonight.
So just to clarify we roll directly in DnD beyond, until yesterday we didn't use a VTT and were largely TOTM but have switched to using Above VTT now. For yesterday the jaeguring players created a duplicate character, I don't want to do the assign unassign option because the players all have various secrets regarding background and story on their sheets and I would not want to put another player in the position of accidently clicking on the background tab and reading something

Yes, this is the point I was touching on when I said:
Natively, without extensions that modify the site, you cannot roll on another characters sheet unless you're the DM
