Has anybody else noticed that many of the creatures in the MM that are nocturnal by nature do not have darkvision? Wolves, panthers, werewolves and werebears are just a few. How are wolves and panthers supposed to hunt their prey at night without being able to see them. And werewolves don't seem quite so terrifying if they have to bumble around in the dark bumping into things.
OTOH, there are some non-supernatural creatures that do have dark vision, like the Rat. I'm not a zoologist, but I don't think rats can see in absolute total darkness.

Rats even have pretty poor night vision, as nocturnal critters go.
I'd add Darkvision to all werecreatures myself, but not to for instance regular wolves - they can definitely see in the dark substantially better than humans, but not to the point of Darkvision. As Pantagruel666 suggests, adding low-light vision back in as an intermediate quality would fix this a lot better than giving a bunch of regular creatures Darkvision.

Many nocturnal creatures don't see in darkness. They hunt under moonligh, using other accute senses of smell or hearing etc but otherwise don't "see" in darkness.
Darkvision could be given to more monsters thoough, but i can see why many don't.

The problem with all of these arguments against dark vision for nocturnal animals is that even on the brightest nights, according to the PHB, the world is in darkness, not dim light. Look it up if you feel like it

Usually the answer is WOTC laziness, which is why cats can't see in the dark but Tabaxi darkvision literally describes it as "a cat's keen senses". I've noticed many of my 5E DMs just hand out Darkvision like candy to any Beast that should be nocturnal, which is probably for the best.

The problem is that 5e doesn't have non-supernatural low light vision. Noctural creatures can't see in total darkness, they see better in dim light.
But also, a lot of monster stats are just missing things.

If you gave them special darkvision that only works in dim, or low light, that would make them more realistic.
Like being a player, love dming.

Right but many real animals yet don't see in complete darkness and can still hunt effectively at night, because of their other senses.
