I've been thinking about the possibility of using everquest as a setting, But I'm not sure if it would be to confusing for people to play a pbp game as if it is a mmorpg. And I'm also not sure if it would be acceptable to play it here when its not designed for dnd 5.0 but it was a 3.5 edition game. Im looking for advice about weather or not I should look for players for this or just stop thinking about it before I get to into it to stop.
You can use whatever setting you want with DND. As the DM, you have complete control, and as long as your players know beforehand, any setting is usable. Some fit better than others, but I don't see why a fantasy game like Everquest would have problems. If you feel some of it wouldn't play well in pen and paper, then just change those bits to fit better.
that sounds encouraging, emphasis on this would be that its a mmorpg where people would have a advantage if they make a group of three and id be using a map with rooms already described and changing the names of towns to match the ones in everquest to best fit the map i already made but im not sure if thats acceptable or is that to much homebrew.-- and by rooms already described i just mean the environment but not whose in them and what they are doing there.
I guess if thats not to much homebrew the next step would be to work on story on the story forums and ask people if thats to much homebrew for open world freeroaming sandbox style game.
Not entirely sure what you're asking. You can certainly use the homebrew tools here to create whatever monsters, spells, character races, magic items, etc that you want to, for use in a campaign or PbP game. Any of that, even though they are drawn from the EQ setting are fine to create for private use. What you won't be able to do is publish that homebrew content for public use since its all someone else's IP.
Ya that helps, i mean privately everyone in the campaign can see the homebrew stuff if i link it to the pbp forum isnt that kinda more like public thats what i think makes it confusing. i mean ya i know the monsters are in the books but if i use their stats in a game then everybody will know what they are i guess thats ok as long as its to have fun and not to make money off it but i dont see how calling it private and putting it in public would really help so i guess what you mean is its ok for people who play on roll 20 or fantasy grounds but not here?
Even if you are playing a pbp game here on the forums, no one can see the details of monsters you've built - you would only be using them on the DM side, for encounter building. Even the players in your campaign would have to know the monsters actual name to search for them on DDB. As far as player-side homebrew, things used in character creation, again, only your players would see them in the builder, no one else would. Plus, only the owner if a character, plus the DM can see a characters sheet. They aren't publicly viewable yet.
So to be clear, even if you post links for any of your private homebrew in the pbp forums, no one but your players can see them. They're just dead links for anyone else, as I understand it.
I don't use Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds, so I can't tell you anything about how they work or what they allow, sorry.

Does that help answer your questions?
