I am going to join a new campaign with friends. I asked the DM if I could play a blood hunter. I've wanted to try it in a different campaign I didn't but I didn't pick it because genie warlock looked fun and it didn't match the aesthetic/theme of the campaign. Luckily the new campaign's DM said yes.
I have done some of the basics for making a character, rolled stats, chose race, and chose some spells. I'm not attached to the race but I made a level 10 Fire Genasi with scores 9,13,13,14,16,17 and right now I put 9 STR, 17 DEX, 14 CON, 13 INT, 16 WIS, 13 CHA. I want to play a profane soul with hexblade, so I tried to max DEX and WIS. I also wanted to play a two-handed melee character. I also am not sure what feats/ASIs to take. As the build stands, I'm thinking +1 DEX, +1 WIS and polearm master.
Here's where I need some help. First, IDK if my stats are placed where they should be, like should I focus on DEX or WIS or something else? Second, all builds I am finding for profane soul are ranged combatants (normally crossbow builds). Would it be better to be a ranged combatant?
What do y'all think? What should I change? Thank you very much for your thoughts!
Profane Soul doesn't really favour ranged weapons over melee or vice versa, but choosing to go ranged tends to be the safer option in terms of taking damage in combat so the expectation is it'll be easier to use Hemocraft without setting yourself up for punishment. The Warlock spells you get offer more options from range as well.
The more glaring issue would be that there are no polearms with finesse. You won't be able to use Dex as your combat stat with one, so choosing to either change your weapon selection or rearrange your stats seems to be in order. High Wisdom isn't particularly beneficial either, aside from the normal uses for ability checks and Wis saves.

I would definitely swap the Con and Wisdom scores for a Blood Hunter.
With ability score increases I now have STR 18, DEX 20, CON 14, INT and WIS 13 and CHA 9.
I feel like the character would be insanely vulnerable to mental saving throws. I'm worried about spells like dominate person.
I wouldn't say "insanely". ;-) You're going to have weaknesses in any case, so pick what you want to be ready for most and be prepared to deal with the rest. Keep in mind that the rest of your party can help too: being dominated is just one good hit away from the caster having to drop concentration, for instance, a Watchers paladin could bolster your saves for a minute or a caster could dispell the effect.
If that doesn't alleviate your worry, you could switch Dex for Wis. With medium armor, +1 or +2 from Dex and one or two defensive spells (Armor of Agathys or Mirror Image maybe) you'd still be reasonably safe from damaging attacks.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
