Higher AC isn't really a significant benefit for wizards. If you really desire it, Bladesinger out competes almost everything for AC without multiclassing.
You'll be getting every level of spells one level late because you multi classed, that means the huge leap in power at level 5 will be at 6, and so on for every other level.
You could get 1 less AC for simply playing the Tortle race, so it's not really relevant that you can get 18 as a Multiclass, it's just an expected feature. That 1 to 3 AC isn't going to compete with getting superior spells every odd level rather than even.
