In old school D&D I thought I remembered the ability Control Undead instead of Turn Undead.
Does anyone else remember something like that? Anyway for a character I customized the Turn Undead to Charm Undead where instead of being frightened for 1 minute, affected undead are charmed instead. It would be cool to be able to have a subclass that can modify a base class power
Yes. In 1e (and maybe 2?) evil clerics could, basically, charm undead. I think maybe they took control of them. I don’t remember the specific term. And they could turn paladins, iirc.
In 3e/3.5 if a cleric channels negative energy (either by dint of being evil or basically neutral but just mean) they rebuke instead of turn undead (basically just make them cower in place instead of run) and command (gain control of) rather than destroy if the undead are weak enough. There are also more dice rolls and much more math involved in the process, which is why it's simplified and streamlined (like nearly everything else) in 5e.
