I like the dev update because I am mostly interested in the tools, not the content. You can get content information in a million places. You can only get content about tool development on the dev update. Often I find new ways to use the tools by watching dev update.
Dev Update was the only DDB videos I watched. I’m holding out hope that they come back, but I might just unsubscribe from DDB on video streaming services.
We don't have any idea if things are still moving on the generic feature system, shared inventories, tracking sidekicks, boons....the list goes on. Two months of no updates but LOTS of sales content sure make it seem like WotC is telling us exactly what it cares about.
Unsubing from DDB channels is a real possibility. I don't get any value from the other content. Only reason I subbed was the dev updates. I can find out about the content in 100 places that aren't trying to sell me on it.
First of all, respect to the mods hard at work here.
The loss of the dev updates is a sign of how post-acquisition dndbeyond has lost a bit of it's magic as it's become a corporate extension. Who has noticed the popup adds on our apps and mobile? Sale! Spend your money!
Yet we have not heard any updates on the feature system update, the database overhaul, and the campaign sharing/item trade features that they were hard at work cracking.
It would be nice to know what is happening behind the scenes and even get an update on the main page when features are updated.
The dev updates were that important touch with us, the customers. I really hope we see this come back.
As I understand the thread, the DevUpdates are no longer happening? That's a shame as the videos were always a great overview of upcoming, planned and newly available features.
I have always enjoyed watching the DevUpdates and find them much more accessible than reading public changelogs.

Let's toast to a speedy return!
I don't make toasts to things I know won't come to fruition.
Wizards as a whole has never been supremely forthcoming with opening the doors behind the scenes to see how the cogs work. They might give teasers to what will happen but then it just happens. UA happens but we never get to see the feedback they received. Magic cards get playtested but we never see the data behind who won what or what decks they were used in. That said we will get the errata and apologies later for when mistakes were made, like with sensitivity issues in Spelljammer or when Magic Cards get banned because they got abused on day 3 of release(though no offers of refunds for the people who purchased those packs for those cards).
This is a post Wizards D&D Beyond. If you want to see D&D Beyond and content creation? Hang tight because I'm sure as we get closer to One D&D you'll see a lot more of it. Liveplays etc. The days of the curtain being pulled open were slowly closing when the prior admin left and slammed shut when Wizards bought them.
Sadly the loss of the Dev Update makes D&D beyond just feel like a generic website. The faces and talking heads made it feel like a community. That even included the bad scripts. I loved seeing the faces of the team. I looked forward to each dev update even more than I do each new book. Apparently, the marketing company has forgotten the fasted way to get people to part with their money is to make them feel like they belong. I don't watch other people play D&D. I don't watch trailers but some nerd-talking tech that I get to use for my game has my undivided attention.

I’m a marketer. Been one for way too long now. Any marketer worth their paycheck will tell you that connecting with customers in places like the Dev Update are worth more than almost any other type of marketing. Loyalty is a massive money maker. It’s MUCH cheaper to keep a customer than make a new one.
The dev updates is very important, if we are paying for content, I want it supported.
Dark gifts from van richens guide to ravenlof, is one example. I've accepted this not being supported as the dev updates had talked about this type of item being on the road map.
With this silence now, are they going to deliver on being to be the best in class for characters creation, tracking etc... I'm thinking of going of dropping my paid subscriptions, moving to a free account, It feels like development of the basic tools has stopped (apart from new books), and moving to a TTS!?!
Please get the basic core of DnD beyond sorted first, otherwise I'm better off with pen and paper
Even if they use the changelog as an excuse of cutting the Dev Updates, the last update was August 5th. That's over 2 months ago. I understand development and implementation can take some time, but it was nice to hear some reassurance and not radio silence.
To be honest it feels like all work on D&D beyond current edition has stopped and if they are doing anything it's for a big re-launch with the full version of One D&D.
They has been no change log addition for 2 months and that was just a little pathing change.
Just popping it to share missing the dev update and worried about the track this is on.. I expected a delay in things with the acquistion but really feeling let down by WotC beyond and their lack of communication.
There's definitely some back-end work going on, because there have been several bug reports popping up in that forum recently for systems that used to work fine, which can only mean they're fiddling under the hood. But at this point, a statement of some sort from someone with authority would go a long way towards reassuring users, instead of what feels like a purposeful lack of response.
Well the changelog has been updated The 'party wizard' has added in a bunch of Avrae and Mobile App updates which, at first glance, shows there's been a veritable slew of updates.
Alas, this is just padding though, along with really minor bug fixes such as typos and WotC announcements about the Hadozee.
No notable updates or feature enhancements to the main product for around 5 months and counting now.
So what do we know? We know they are wanting to transition to a VTT. It would be to their benefit to have that up and going with the new addition. I am betting that a lot of the focus is on that right now. The rumor mill says they will do a lot of micro-transactions. I think miniatures, terrain, and skins might be a big part of that. As much as they like giving away stuff for character sheets none of it is worth paying money for. I have even hit my limit on digital dice. The miniature market however can offer a lot, even digital ones.
I am not even sure what the major issues or wants are for the current system. The current system is not perfect but I can run a game online with what we have. The one thing I would like to see more work on is the encounter builder. Yet if they are moving to a VTT is it really worth doing all the extra work when it will be all miniature based in the future? As someone who does theater of the mind, I am not excited by this possibility. I avoided miniatures in 4th edition, It is disappointing to think I may be forced to run a VTT to have access to the virtual tools of D&D beyond and have to start running miniatures.

The VTT sounds good but it won't be available for a long time, maybe 1.5 to 2 years from now when OD&D is released. With all the talk of monetization I'm pretty sure the VTT is going to cost extra. They'd be crazy not to charge extra for it. So, for right now and later when the VTT is available, the encounter system needs improvement.

Correct, but I’m not one who is going to air out laundry in a thread dedicated to asking a community question.

Just pinging this back to the top. We need the Dev update back.

I agree, hearing nothing about the direction of things is getting old.
