I doubt they'll stop supporting Basic Rules at all; it's the trial edition of the rules to let people dip a toe in and get invested while still holding back a lot of content to then sell down the line. This is a very well proven and established model, I doubt it's going anywhere.
Oh, I'm sure they won't get rid of basic rules. They might, however, choose to only offer the 2024 basic rules on this website, once those come out.
I agree this seems likely - but anyone will be able to take the 2014 SRD and rehost it somewhere else in perpetuity, even if they succeed at nuking the OGL.
(Though honestly - knowing the backlash and clickbait headlines likely to spur enraged and ill-informed grognards who will be convinced WotC is "deleting 2014 from the internet," keeping everything available on DDB with a Legacy tag may be the most peaceful option.)

Not everyone that would be unhappy if that happened is an "enraged and ill-informed grog nard", some of us just take what we are told at face value, and WotC has been known to treat their statements regarding many things that turned into PR issues the last couple of years as more of "guidelines than actual statements" to paraphrase Capt. Barbossa.

MotM made the Elemental Evil races legacy. But those are still offered for free. So while what you're saying makes sense, I wouldn't be surprised if they continue offering the 2014 SRD. They've already coded it. So even if it gets marked as legacy, there's a good chance it'll be tehre.

I hate to break it to you, but that’s really all most PR statements are. A statement of intent is not in itself an absolute binding commitment. Which is not to say that it’s fine and acceptable if and when that gets exploited to mislead people, but to a certain degree it is also on the viewer to be mindful of that fact as well.

I am speaking more to what they say to quell the unhappy after the PR nightmares, not the nightmares themselves. I also think further discussion may bring the mods in so I will just move along as several of us have beat this horse enough.

I'm not saying people can't be unhappy if their books become Legacy, but even if thats the route they go, we've been through that exact scenario before. Thread after thread and headline after headline had people readily convinced that Volo's and MToF were being completely erased from the site even if you had them already purchased, or that if you hadn't, there would be absolutely no way to access the material ever again. Neither of those were true of course, but it did nothing to stem the hysteria.

I have little issue with Legacy content/tags as they have been implemented so far whether or not I own or missed out on the legacy content (I own all of it). It is not my first choice on how to handle that issue, but it is not a bad/poor solution to the issue and is likely a better solution than anything I could come up with. It does seem to be working well, and any that would have been interested in content that has become Legacy has had ample opportunity and a fair amount of time to buy it before it became unavailable.
I do understand there are/were plenty of people that fit the description you have given in regards to clickbait and teeth gnashing, I am simply pointing out there are plenty of people like me that are/were unhappy with what happened, and has yet to happen that do not deserve to be put in the same box.
That said we all know I am one to take WotC at their word and hold their feet to the fire so to speak. WotC does like to leave plenty of wiggle room when it comes to addressing the upset portion of their customer base as far as how and what will be done to appease the angry/upset customer base maybe PR/Marketing shouldn't be the department making those kind of statements. If they say they are going to do X to fix something by this date then do it, if they say Y will not happen again then do not let Y happen again. It is that simple, and if they are unable to do what they said they would to make up for their mistakes, it does not make me an enraged grog nard, it just means I have a good memory.
While I have no interest in the '24 core or even the VTT, I have been very happy with quite a few of the adventures/source books released recently, so much so that I have actually pre-ordered the newest Vecna book, and paid full price for a couple of others, something I didn't think I would do post Tasha's.
TLDR, not everyone that disagrees with WotC's choices is anti-WotC, and we don't like being painted with the same broad brush as those that are; most of us are somewhere in the middle.

I never called you anti-WotC. In fact, I don't recall mentioning you at all 🤨
"Turning the existing core books Legacy will cause misinformed threads and clickbait headlines that lead to backlash" is, based on prior experience, a true statement.

You did not mention me by name, and I take no issue with your claim, though the unnecessary negative label "enraged and ill-informed grognards" you placed on the people, that like me, are vocal when WotC does things that bring the backlash is something that serves no purpose in this discussion except to belittle people with a different view than yours. What exactly does that add to the argument, and what does it have to do with the topic of this thread? Which we should return to.
