one method I'd consider is that every player rolls stats, and then everyone can pick which of those rolled arrays they wish to use.
That way you balance out when one player rolls two 18's, but if someone needed 3 stats they might go for an array with three 15-16's rather than two 18's and a 12.
I do feel that rolling stats involves risk, and when I first started I enjoyed it - now I prefer point-buy, for the agency of choosing rather than relying on not getting appalling rolls!
