New editions always seem to cause a schism in DND, i came back to 5E after a long break from TTRPG since 3.5E. The talk of a new edition made me worry given all that has gone on before (and since). WotC have an opportunity to clarify what is proposed in 6E and get our feedback (at a more strategic level than rules testing). If they choose to just give us what they think we want then it will make the split all the worse..
Why would D&D Beyond ever remove my access to books I purchased? Why do you even think this will be done? Are you not aware of what a business is? It's "give me your money" and you get something in return. If they ever withraw my access to the books I purchased, they'll know they won't ever have any Euro from me anymore. Removing access to my books is not a smart move. Why do you even contemplate this possibility?
Recognize that the books you purchased are Virtual Items. Here's what you agreed to when you set up your account:
"7.5.Limited License. Your right to use any Virtual Items or Virtual Currency that you obtain is limited: you have a limited, non-exclusive, non-assignable, nontransferable, non-sublicensable, revocable license to use such Virtual Items and Virtual Currency solely for your personal entertainment and noncommercial use in connection with Games or Services. We, in our sole discretion, have the absolute right to manage, modify, substitute, replace, suspend, delete, or cancel, Virtual Currency and Virtual Items without any notice or liability to you, including deletion upon termination of your Account.
YOU ACKNOLWEDGE AND AGREE, NOTWITHSTANDING ANYTHING TO THE CONTRARY HEREIN, THAT YOU WILL HAVE NO CLAIM, RIGHT, TITLE, OWNERSHIP, OR PROPRIETARY INTEREST IN VIRTUAL CURRENCY OR VIRTUAL ITEMS TO WHICH YOU AQUIRE ACCESS REGARDLESS OF ANY CONSIDERATION OFFERED OR PAID IN EXCHANGE AND THAT WIZARDS WILL NOT BE LIABLE IN ANY MANNER FOR THE DESTRUCTION, IMPAIRMENT, MODIFICAITON, OR OTHER DAMAGE OR LOSS OF ANY KIND CAUSED TO THE AFOREMENTIONED, INCLUDING THEIR DELETION UPON THE TERMINATION OF YOUR ACCOUNT.
7.6.Availability. Virtual Items, Virtual Currency, fees, and billing procedures may change over time. The existence of a particular offer for Virtual Items or Virtual Currency does not mean Wizards will maintain or continue to make available the Virtual Items or Virtual Currency or that offer. The scope, variety and type of Virtual Items and Virtual Currency that you may obtain can change at any time and we have the right to manage, regulate, control, modify or remove Virtual Currency or Virtual Items in our sole discretion, in which case we will have no liability to you or anyone for the exercise of such rights. Wizards may change its fees or billing procedures upon notice of the changes. If any such change is unacceptable to you, your sole recourse is to terminate your account. Your continued use of the Websites, Games, or Services after notice of the changes will indicate your acceptance of those changes. The real-world price of Purchased Virtual Currency may vary depending on the amount you purchase and where you're purchasing. Wizards may limit the total Virtual Currency quantity that may be purchased at any one time or that may be held in your account. Price and availability of Virtual Currency and Virtual Items are subject to change without notice."
It would be another PR blunder to wholesale delete the stuff people have purchased, but WotC is 100% within their rights to do it.
I fully expect them to remove the legacy content once 6E comes out. The right way to do that is to offer a PDF download of an account's purchased legacy content over a short period of time, allowing us to archive the older 5E material stuff we've purchased. However, WotC wants you to buy and use the new material, and it's counter to their business goals to continue to support a competing system.
Also, I don't see any chance that they will be supporting ******** on D&D beyond once 6E comes out - it's bad business for them.

This is exactly why I started the thread. I don't think most users realize or think about this. Maybe you're okay if your 5e books go away at some point, and that's cool.

"Orcs are savage raiders and pillagers with stooped postures, low foreheads, and piggish faces with prominent lower canines that resemble tusks." MM p245 (original printing) You don't OWN your books on DDB: WotC can change them any time. What do you think will happen when OneD&D comes out?
Huh. I recently returned after a 20-odd year break. Back then, I was almost always the DM; the last stuff I bought back then was was some of the basic 2nd Ed paper books. All of my materials collection has been gone for years.
I once spent hundreds of dollars on physical book copies, dice, figurines, etc.. Perhaps this time around, I'll remain a player, stick with one set of hand-me-down dice and some pencils and paper, and rely on others' documentation and such.

I'm not exactly cool with it, but I accept it (although I'm guessing you're referring to the plural, general "you", and not addressing me specifically... :)
I'd like to have a version of them somewhere around for future reference (like I do with some of my 1E, 2E, 3E and 4E books). If WotC gave away a PDF download of the material I've licensed and then washed their hands of it, I would have zero complaints.
My experience is that the stuff I look back at the most are the adventures and setting materials. The rule sets are rarely, if ever, referenced in my experience.
Something I would like to see to promote the new edition, is if you own the PHB, MM, or DMG, then you get 1 year where you can upgrade/swap them to the new edition book for free. Additionally, if you want to upgrade them after the 1 year, offer an upgrade/trade option for 50% off. As for other books, maybe the option to "return" them for credit for books in the new edition.
Exporting the books from DnDBeyond is 100% legal and every method used is up to you. There are a lot of extensions, ways to export to Roll20, pdf, Foundry, FG, other webs... Attending to EU laws, they are YOUR books, nevermind that the terms of use of the web says.
