I know I'm thinkiing about allowing a player to use it with throwing weapons just for rule of cool
Then do it. It's your decision. But RAW and RAI that can't be done, and the reason is that it's too powerful.
J-Craw is on record saying the reason is actually because it doesn't support the fantasy. Jump to 2:29 and see for yourself. He suggests that the numbers work out fine, balance-wise.
Yeah, Jeremy Crawford says that for whatever reason. But actually being able to smite from a distance is too powerful. That makes the paladin the best ranged fighter in the game. In fact, it makes it mechanically absurd to become a melee paladin. But anyway, that feature didn't pass the playtest, so it doesn't make much sense to keep talking about it either. Paladins won't be able to smite from a distance, and for good reason.
I certainly wouldn't form any rules opinion based on the D&D movie as it may display unsupported elements, such as when the druid Wildshape into a owlbear etc

Was this before or after they released a blockbuster movie where the coolest, most powerful character was a Paladin with a ranged dps sword?
There are a lot of folks would argue that Doric was waaaaaaay cooler
It’s unclear if the ranged attacks were smiting.
