what got me interested? about two years ago when i started HS, the school was runnin a lunch club specifically for D&D, i had no idea what it was at the time and all i was told is that it was an RPG and so i gave it a try, i was given a pre-made character sheet (one of the standard ones out of the box) and had my first session, i was imediatley hooked and the next year it was a "school sport" and i was part of one of the largest groups there (6 people including the DM), and it was the best campaign i've played in a while, unfortunately the teacher that ran it left and so did said DM, so this year i took up the role of DM and i have four PC's now, honestly a great experience with that number of players
I'm still surprised how integrated D&D is now in some places of the world. Thank you for sharing!

DM for life by choice, biggest fan of D&D specifically.
It began with concern for my older brother during the Satanic Panic. I asked to borrow some of his books to look through...AD&D 1e PHB and DMG, and the Red Box. I devoured the information in those books, and became adept in High Gygaxian. I also learned that was nothing to be afraid of, it's just a game of puzzles and riddles...which I love.
I asked to play with his group, even though I was significantly younger. He agreed, I can only assume to give me a hard time. I was hooked.
Got my bestfriend into it, and by the 6th grade we were playing/DM'ing with the college folks at the local university.
Wow! Understanding High Gygaxian is quite an achievement. I've recently read AD&D 1st Edition Monster Manual and Player's Handbook, now I'm reading the Dungeon Master's Guide, and a few times I failed to understand some of the rules, even after a decade of 2nd, 3rd and 5th edition of D&D.

I got into D&D in 2014, in my last year of highschool. I had heard about D&D years before (I watched the original D&D movie and liked it!) but it all sounded way out of my reach financially and intellectually (I thought it was too difficult). But luckily my friend had a game group and told me and my friends how awesome the game was, so we decided to play a campaign. Amazingly, even though the DM acted like a sadistic jerk, we all liked the game enough to give it a go under a new DM (namely, myself). I always wanted to create a world and have people interact with it, ever since I was little, so DMing just felt natural. Of course, I wasn't very good at it, and it wasn't until I started DMing 5th Edition in 2015 that I actually managed to run satisfying sessions for all involved. Coincidentally, 2014 was the year I was diagnosed with clinical depression, and D&D has been tied with studying History as the single most significant factor of my recovery.

Saw a few classmates playing at a picnic table during lunch back in middle school. Joined the game the next day after spending the evening at the dm's house creating a character and going over the basics of how to play.

Yeah a dm who is a jerk would kill a campaign the game is a story crafted not only by the dm using source material but by the whole group having a laugh

the dm was orignaly ment to be hidden away by a huge bamboo screen and took on a more refferee story teller roll not as such playing with/ against the players morre of he was just a facilitator where as now i find how you dm changes how they play
My best friend grew up on 2E and then converted over to 3E. While I had played and thoroughly enjoyed the board game Hero Quest, I resisted playing any other tabletop RPG for a long time due to a bad experience trying to play a fantasy game under the Palladium system with some friends of mine when none of us really understood what a tabletop adventure should look like.
Anyway, I came over to my friend's house once when they were playing D&D. His brother was DMing at the time and asked me to play a missing player's character. I relented, got dominated, and nearly killed the party. That's all I needed. I went out and bought the 3.0 PHB the next day. 😅
As I imagine a lot of other gamers are doing today, my first introduction to this whole D&D thing 3 decades ago was from a little game called Baldur's Gate 😁

I know! BG 3 has literally been watching History happen before our eyes! Again! I only played the original BG games after I was thoroughly "indoctrinated" by D&D, but seeing all these hundreds of thousands of fresh players is warming my heart more than a little!

I heard about dnd a few years ago and it peaked my interest but never started playing then i watched stranger thinks and decided to play so i started playing in 2019 now i am a dm for my school games club and i now have all of the core rule books and mordakanin presents
First and most of all, I love how it's a RPG you can actually effect in meaningful ways! You can play the same adventure back to back with the same group and even the same characters and it's two different games because someone picked A instead of B and now things have changed in the story.
I like how, depending on your DM's openness, you can build any character you want essentially.
For 5e especially I loved the ease of learning; I don't know if I'd be playing this game if it was another edition.
I like the socialization of the game. This is in RP between characters and just general table socialization because we humans need outside contact.
Critical Role and seeing that group play definitely for me interested as well for the reasons listed above but I wouldn't know about the game period if not for them.
Again, this feels like a mainly 5e era thing, but I like the acceptance in the community. It's not perfect I know, but there's less gatekeeping it feels with this game than other things and that's nice. People are constantly trying to get more people to play and you don't always see that in fandoms; the diversity is cool.
