I know several people in their 40s-50s who play including myself. One time I went into a Vans store for shoes and a young kid said "why are these old people buying Vans" to his mom, I just shook my head lol. I grew up wear vans and still wear them today.
My group spans from 60 years old down to 28, and we're having a blast. So, yes they can :)
