Obviously there's no "right" answer here. But I'm interested in the discussion.
I have a Swords Bard gish who just hit level 8 and is looking to replace an older spell. Wanting to give him a boost specifically during combat, I've narrowed the choices down to two:
Given the various tradeoffs, which do you think is the better choice (with the "why" being the important part?)
(EDIT: If it matters, he has the Metamagic Adept feat, with Quickened Spell and Distant Spell. But feel free to dismiss that if you'd rather discuss a straight-up comparison.)
Greater invisibility. It’s guaranteed to work (enemy can save on the other one) and will work against all enemies in the fight vs. just one target.
The only advantage I can see to the other is if you blind the target, it would help all your allies, as opposed to just you. And it can really help shut down an enemy caster, as many spells involve a target you can see. But if they save, you’ve just used an action and spell slot for nothing.
They have different purposes. Greater Invisibility is an ally buff, it doesn't help anyone but its target, whereas Blindness/Deafness is an enemy debuff, it doesn't hinder anyone but its target. Somewhat unusually for a lasting spell, Blindness/Deafness does not require concentration, which can be significant depending on what other concentration spells you use.
Also worth noting that Greater Invisibility is L4, whereas Blindness/Deafness is L2. That's a pretty substantial difference.
