Given that the concept here is Domain of Dread, he probably wants to escape - maybe getting enough frankenstein animals together to build him an astral rocket, or network enough of them together into a hive mind so he can contact some other plane for rescue or something. And it being a Domain of Dread, the Dark Powers basically let him get close enough to keep trying before something inevitably goes wrong.

I thought it explained enough. He overlooks important details in his plan and gets blindsided by something he didn't account for or he gets too cocky.
