If the new D&D 2024 Player's Handbook material is free, why are the only choices for 2024 races in the Character Builder Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, and Human?
The Free Basic Rules are free -- but they are not "finished" yet -- there is more that will go into it as the new DMG and MM come out -- with a new free version and a new SRD that will be released next year.
Next, it gives only the few options so that you will buy the actual PHB if you want more. It is not a complete thing, and never has been (even the 2014 free rules do not give you every option).

Welp then they can just take that long jump off a short pier. I'm not giving them any more of my money than they already got for multiple, multiple 2014 digital books. This is a money grab pure and simple.

Well, they are a business, and that business is selling stuff, so, yes, it is indeed a money grab. If it wasn't, they wouldn't be in business. Legally, they have to do money grabs.
There's going to be a lot more digital books in the future, too -- not just the new DMG and MM, but also books on Forgotten Realms (2 of them, there), new adventure books, new expansion books, and of course stuff like the Sigil environment and all that.
All of the stuff before going back to 1974 was money grabs as well. 0e branched into the B/X/BECMI series because of a money grab, AD&D (1e) was created as a Money grab, 2e was a money grab, 3e was a money grab, 3.5e was a money grab, 4e was a money grab.
Not wanting to spend any more money I can totally understand. My group played 2e for 25 years because we felt that they went crazy with the late stage 2e chapbooks and the entire 3.x thing -- so I totally get it.
but the entire point of business is grabbing for money. Hell, a job is a money grab -- just for you.

You've still got those books. There's no indication any of them are going anywhere.
Yeah, it's a thing called capitalism. Companies exist to make money.
Then they can offer a superior product and make it worthwhile. D&D 2024 isn't (to me).
Fixed that last bit there for you. It may not be the product you were wanting, but it is one that has been clearly asked for by tables hot-fixing 5E issues for the last decade.

That's an opinion that has value and merit of exactly the same quality and importance as the following opinion:
They offered a great quality product, superior to any other game on the market; very much an improvement on the prior edition. It's worth it.
This is the cool thing about both: they are both right; just for the individuals who say them.

The PHB is not free. The basic rules are free. If you want more, you still need to buy the PHB.
A company can’t stay in business giving away their product.
So, first, the PHB is not free.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
