My theory is we can see update of the crunch, and some pages of the lore, like the mini-gazeteer of Greyhawk in DMG 2024, something like Dungeon #110, explaining the city-states.
The metaplot will be not touched at all but we could see the return of iconic characters like Sadira, Agis and company.
The region of Tyr or Athasian tablelands isn't a good sandbox for the 5e standars. Now the banning of PC species or classes is not wellcome by current WotC team. What if any player wanted to add the "psionic" PC species: fraals, dromites, xephs, maendas, elans, synads and sharminds. Maybe the reason is some sorcerer-kings wanted to cast reincarnation spell to reward their most loyal and best agents, but somebody happened.
Living constructs like warforged, autognomes, glitchlings or shardminds don't need food or water, and that in DS breaks the power balance. Elans shouldn't worry about food or water thanks the racial trait "repletion".
Could I play with a biopunk or a psionic artificer in Athas? or a player wanted to play with a crusader (martial adept from 3.5 Tome of Battle), a shadowcaster(3.5 Tome of Magic), a favored soul (sorcerer who uses divine magic instead arcana), a totemist shaman (magic of incarnum) or an archivist (Heroes of Horror, a divine spellcaster without armour)
The Athaspace had got several celestial bodies. Maybe Rajaat sent more champions to the nearest worlds to cause troubles because they were rival powers, or those aliens weren't wellcome in Athas.
Will we see the return of Athasian genasies from 4e? Will be the tari (Athasian ratfolk) a PC specie?
What if any group used spinewyrms, a no-sentient beast, to create a dragon-like creature like the ones from 3rd Ed?
What if other Athasian continents were conquered by creatures who don't need food or water? Fiends, undead or elementals, for example.
