So, I've purchased a few premade campaigns, and I'm trying to use D&D Beyond to host one of those campaigns, but whenever I go to create a campaign, it doesn't give me any of my purchased content as options for using a premade campaign. Is there a reason for this? How do I make it work? Do I just have to Create a Campaign and use the information from the book?
A campaign on D&D Beyond is a tool for collecting characters together for the purpose of giving out characters, sharing content, sharing dice rolls, and pulling characters into maps. It's not a campaign in the sense of a campaign book.
So, I purchased "Vecna: Eve of Ruin" digitally, and I would like to host that campaign through D&D Beyond, since the campaign is fully written, is there a way for me to use "Create From Premade Campaign" in order to host that campaign, or do I have to use "Create A Campaign" and just rewrite (or copy & paste) all of the info from the book into that blank campaign.
What info would you need to post into the campaign? I'm confused as to what you're trying to do. Lemme explain how I'd use the campaign tool to run Eve of Ruin
I make a campaign and name it Eve of Ruin or whatever. I enable content sharing for that campaign
I make some pre-made characters for the campaign for players to pick from if they want
I send my players the invite link for that campaign. 3 make new characters using the shared content, 1 uses a premade character. I can now see all 4 characters in that campaign page
We play a few sessions and don't need maps—I can see my players rolls in the game log through the campaign page
Session 3 and we need a map. I launch maps from the campaign page and am presented with a blank maps page.
From the map browser, I select an appropriate map
I populate the map with monster tokens and then the PC tokens which are accessible to me because I'm using maps in a way that's linked to the campaign
My players launch maps from their character sheets and can control their tokens, see my monster rolls, etc
I'm using the D&D Beyond campaign tool to:
View all the characters
Share content
View dice rolls
Bring everyone into maps
Build encounters
What is it outside of the above you're trying to do?
I was mostly just wondering if I could do that in a way that included the description, DM notes, public notes, and everything else through the "Create From Premade Campaign" option rather than "Create A Campaign" because I want to use a premade campaign, but when I try the premade campaign option, it only lists "Intro To Stormwreck Island", "Frozen Sick", and "Prisoner 13". So I was curious if there was a way for me to set it up through the premade campaign option.
When you say the "description" what do you mean? DM notes and public notes aren't part of any published campaign, they're literally notes you take as you play.
"Create From Premade Campaign" doesn't do much more than just make a campaign with a ready completed name. They're examples on how to set up a campaign
To help explain it better... When you create a campaign, you are setting up a space for you and your characters. Your players will join the campaign, and everyone will have their character sheets in that space. For you as the DM, you will need to go to the Maps VTT. In the Maps VTT utilize the maps browser. You should see a listing there for any maps included with the adventure you purchased. You will utilize those maps to place your monster tokens and player character tokens. In that same space, you will have an encounter builder from which you can add all the the tokens, and then track combat.
When you create the "campaign" there is a space there for notes. Your own private ones, and ones you create for your characters. The "Pre-made" campaigns you saw are entry level beginner campaigns for someone to learn the game, and how to DM on. What you purchased can be used digitally or at the table.
Lastly, to run the campaign, you will need to open the adventure up through your library. Typically you would have one window open for the book, and another open for the VTT, maybe a third for the character sheets.
Got to the homepage of DNDbeyond and scroll down until you see "Jump in to play". Start there. I am sorry, WoTC has always done a terrible job at onboarding new players and DM's and does not explain their digital products well at all. If you need more one on one help, feel free to ping me and Id be glad to jump on a discord call to lend a hand.
Do I just have to Create a Campaign and use the information from the book?
Yeah. The campaign page is just DM notes on a page that gives you an invitation link you send to the people you want to join your xampaign. They click on the link, it will ask them to select which of their existing dndbeyond characters they want to joun the campaign. And then their charavtwr shows up on your campaign page.
The notes page is where you might post any homebrew rules for your campaign.
Thats all there is really.
