i have looked all over xanathar's guide to everything. what page does it tell me about the deck of many things? i am thinking of using it in my campaign.
Beware the Deck of Many Things can really turn a campaign upside down really fast, but it can be really fun.
This. Don't hand it out too early if it's something you want to use and just be prepared for the chaos that can come from it. If your players know nothing about it, maybe find some minor way of warning them so that they don't just draw every card. I know some DMs refuse to use it, but I like the possibilities that can come from it, no matter how crazy. Also, decide on which version you want to use (the half deck or the full deck).
I got the deck as my wizard I was playing and had some good luck with it (drew 4 cards total during the time of having it, 3 of them good). Out of character, I knew I was playing with fire, but the success rate was going to be real tempting for him to draw again. Then he died, because squishy wizard is squishy and now that deck is lost to some evil somewhere...
I recently bought The Deck of Many Things from thedeckofmany.com. They make decks for DMs to use as visual aids in 5e. I've used it in a couple of adventures and I will admit it does overpower the players a little, but not too much if you are careful about it.
I honestly like when it shows up, but it only does if I'm running a prewritten, I'd never be so evil as to add it to any homebrew campaign of mine. I like that, not only is there a big risk, there's also huge reward. So, before drawing, players have to decide if the chance of being boosted a level, or getting 50k gold, outweighs the chance of a pit fiend or avatar of death fighting them.
