So I've never played DnD before but I've been really wanting to get into it recently, so I've been "practicing" making a character sheet for fun lol. I've been trying to do a lot of research and I think I filled everything out correctly, but I wanna make sure I did everything correctly :P Thanks for looking (sorry if I posted this thread in the wrong area, didn't know anywhere else to post it in)
It looks like you have everything you need except for the story elements. Since it sounds like you’re not part of a game yet, it makes sense that you don’t have a story to your character.
One thing I don’t like: you have really good ability scores. It seems like you rolled for your ability scores. While it’s not impossible to come up with those numbers, considering you don’t have a game to play yet, I wouldn’t get in the habit of making such a strong character. Your future party might use point buy, your DM might restrict the scores, or you might just roll bad. This is my opinion, but my experience is that characters with stats like the one you created are a bit problematic for two reasons.
I 1. It’s hard to balance encounters around
2. Other players with more normal scores will be left out
#2 is important. Dnd is a co-op story-telling game. You wouldn’t want one character (out of a party of say 4) to do everything with ease. While dealing damage and hitting everything is fun, and succeeding more often than not might seem good, you want room for everyone to contribute and those fails you might mak leave room for fun situations.
Not all of your attributes are extraordinary high. If that‘s what you rolled and like to play it should be fine, keeping in mind the recommendation from Account_of_holding above. It is indeed difficult for a novice DM to balance encounters for players min/maxing their characters. Besides, it is often more interesting to play a character who is not ‚good at everything‘, but has it‘s stengths and weaknesses.
Experienced DM‘s will adjust the adventure accordingly, so regardless if playing godlike characters or very weak ones, challenges will be adepted. In essence, players wouldn‘t get any benefit‘s playing with high stats, but may experience their fellow adventurers will dislike it, because sometimes they might have it more difficult than needed. As this game is co-op oriented and would benefit from other adventurers filling the lack in low attributes and skills, it will spoil some fun for them, if one player is playing just being good at everything. Just keep this in mind and try to work together achieving a goal, instead of focussing it on your own. Everyone wants to shine during play, once in a while.

Yeah, Don't really have any story elements within the character because I'm not using him any any sort of game. I did write like a short two paragraph blob about his "backstory" for fun but it isn't all that good lol. Thanks for the tips about the modifiers, I did roll them. I used the dice rolling method because that was what the tutorial video I was watching told me to do, I'll keep the other methods in mind so my character isn't really OP lol. Thanks for the help :)

You don‘t need to have the background ready at start. It could build upon the environment and story within the first 2-3 sessions. But it depends on how a DM might want to handle this as well. Backgrounds can be a good use for adventure hooks, however I personally don‘t use it much. Maybe I could improve in this area. 🙂
