Have you played 4E at all? From what I hear, it was designed to focus on use of a battle mat, and balancing power between classes. Matt Coville has a good video about the things he liked about 4E and it sounds to me like that is more what you'd be looking for, rather than a whole new edition. I believe the 4e PHB is free on DM's guild.
Dang I dropped the quote. As editions for magic power goes 5e isn't the worst it isn't the best. 4e for sure was more balanced. I'd even place 2e as more balanced in play, the combination of how saves worked and magic resistance generally kept magic to low level area of effect damage dealing with a lot of utility. If you wanted to kill the demon or whatever the specialist fighter is the one who knocked out the damage. 3e/3.5 and to a lesser extent 5e have a broken save system too many save or else effects are almost guaranteed against most enemies except boss fights.

4e was okay when it was supported with the digital tools
some of those tools are still functional online
the problem I had with 4e was that mechanics were tied to epic destinies and paragon paths
the combat was slow as players tried to workout 15 check boxes to try to get 1 damage bonus for each condition
I don't think there's going to be a perfect edition
I am looking forward to 6th though
Looking forward to 6E, hopefully by Fall 2021.
Hoping for 4E balance, faster combat, and mechanics separated from character themes.
