Alright, not sure if this is completly approriate for this kind of setting, but here's a fun one coming up just right for halloween. Our group just defeated one of the bad guy necromancer's generals. My character works for the good guy necromancers, who send her in to search for one of their opperatives. I'm pretty sure this guys knows quiet a bit about what was going on, but we killed him before he could spill the beans (considering the guy just killed my last character and another player's one, I don't really feel sad about it). Luckily though I'm working for a group of sorta necromancers, so I figure they can make him talk if neccessary. Unfortunately they are in their HQ and our group is still smack dab in the middle of the enemy stronghold, so it will take some time for me to bring his corpse to them. Now what would be the best way to keep the body preserved while we're looking for an escape route? Or at least keep in good enough condition for speak with dead to still work.
It's a bit of a morbid question, I know, but maybe you are still willing to give me some ideas? Regardless, thanks for taking time to read this and a thank you in advance.
Interesting idea, though maybe I should clarify that while my character works for the good guy necromancers, she isn't one herself. She's an order of lycan bloodhunter and I'm also fairly certain none of the other party members know the spell as well. Now add to that that the world is ruled by a church who sees necromancy as sacrilegious, and I'm pretty sure I won't get my hand on anyone who can cast that spell that easily. Hmm, maybe if I can get the body to the guy I was sent to retrieve, he might know something, but who knows how long it will take to track him down.
No, I was thinking about something more mundane. I know freezing for example could preserve a body, though there isn't any ice around. Though that's what freezing ray is for right? Anything else anybody could come up with?
Oh, and for Speak with Dead you don't need a 'fresh' corpse, just one that has a mouth.
Uh, Scree. Been a while since I saw the guy somewhere. Where's Jen though ;)
But yeah, speak with Dead is what I had in mind. I just need to get the body to my employees before it begins to completly rot away. Hmm, how long does it take for a human to decompose? Well, depends were the body is stored, I suppose.
Hmm, maybe I have to look into mummifycation a bit, make a shrunken head. Thx for the input though.

You have about 3 days before it starts to bloat and get really gross. About 2 weeks before it starts losing teeth and and nails. And about a month before the flesh starts to liquify. (All according to Google).
Assuming skeletons are a no-go, I'd say you have around 6 weeks.
Removing the stomach, liver, and intestines and packing the body cavity and casket with salt or honey will work to mummify it.

I guess any way you preserve meats.
Drying, pickling, salting, ...
