There was a monster that did this. i forget the exact wording, but it was something along the lines of "use the original attack roll to target the new creature, dealing the attacks normal damage if it would hit that creatures AC"
Can anyone direct me to a monster or subclass feature that does this? i swear one existed somewhere
Thanks! That works just as well. Im doing a lightsaber style item for my player, and he wants to deflect ranged attacks. The wording there can be used more or less. in case you curious...
Redirect Attack. When a creature the goblin can see targets it with an attack, the goblin chooses another goblin within 5 feet of it. The two goblins swap places, and the chosen goblin becomes the target instead.
While holding the saber, if a creature you can see targets you with a ranged attack and misses, you can use a reaction to choose another creature you can see within 30 feet of you. You deflect the attack, and the chosen creature becomes the target instead. You then add this weapons attack and damage bonus to the attack and damage rolls of the deflected attack.
The Monk Drunken Master subclass has a melee ability similar and it's much more concise.
Redirect Attack. When a creature misses you with a melee attack roll, you can spend 1 ki point as a reaction to cause that attack to hit one creature of your choice, other than the attacker, that you can see within 5 feet of you.
When you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can expend one superiority die to attempt to damage another creature with the same attack. Choose another creature within 5 feet of the original target and within your reach. If the original attack roll would hit the second creature, it takes damage equal to the number you roll on your superiority die. The damage is of the same type dealt by the original attack.
Is this battle master maneuver what you are thinking of?

Think the wording is different but sounds like goblin boss from the monster manual
Edit: goblin boss trades spaces with a goblin next to it and the goblin becomes the target.

Thank you for the responses, those will also help!
