With Grung recently added to the mix of races I've wondered how players and DMs were handling the vertical and odd character race.
Can they cling to walls while attacking? Can they climb things a Tabaxi couldn't? Are they allowed on the ceiling? Do they make athletics checks to jump or auto success due to their racial trait?
If they're immune to poison and its effects can they get drunk? Do drugs effect them?
Might be beneficial for you to read the material and most of your questions will be answered. There is nothing about sticking to walls and ceilings. So, no.
It says immune to poison damage and the poisoned condition. However, getting drunk would be something to be determined by the DM. Though alcohol can be considered a poison, I don't consider it as such in my games and have my players roll for constitution while drinking. Nobody is immune, or they would't be drinking to begin with. I'm not sure how other DMs do it, but I go by the levels of exhaustion to determine level of drunkenness as that seems to work best for me, personally. I also feel it fits the normal characterization of real world status.

Although there are no explicit rules for drinking alcohol presented as RAW, it's interesting to note that every instance of a drunk NPC specifies that they are suffering from the poisoned condition.
Agreed. But, if you've ever been around drunk people, attended public high school or college, then you would know that drinking to excess and drunkenness isn't a cut and dry "poisoned condition". The levels of exhaustion actually fit much better. If your players continue drinking for a competitive game between players, they could reach level 6 and DIE. Just like real life.
In regards to NPCs....we typically DON'T care about them and don't want to waste the time on the little details as it really has no bearing on the overall story. A cut and dry approach here is acceptable and preferable. And, like you said, there are no explicit rules, leaving it up to the DM's discretion. If you are more of a cut and dry approach person, then by all means. But...my players have had a history of engaging in drinking games to excess with their characters and the "poisoned condition" really suffers little consequence in the grand scheme of things.
Guess others aren't as stoked about the grung as I am? Bummer! Oh well, I think their awesome!
Some misconceptions though. Lets clear that up. First off Grung are treated as tree frogs (Grippli dont exist in 5e) so they 100% stick to surfaces; ceilings being the exception (obviously need Spider Climb), and how do I know my information is correct? Cause I watched Chris Lindsey DM.
Second the Dwarf has resistance to poison, and do you know why? Cause of their high tolerance to alcohol. (words directly from the dev's mouth) So it's not far fetched to think a race immune to poison being immune to the effects of booze or drugs. Now holding the booze down is another story.
I see lots of potential for grung and think they deserve a more offical release with some tweaks to the stats. Like dropping amphibian and adding resistance to fall damage.
Feel free to add your thoughts opinions or quirky character builds.

The grung stats provided are the exact stats Chris Lindsey used. The One Grung Above compendium page even includes a foreword/disclaimer by Lindsey himself. So I'm not sure where you're getting this idea from.
What do you mean? How I'm getting they climb walls? I'm getting my info from watching One Grung Above DM'd by Lindsey, and people that played at Lindsey's table at cons. I can link a youtube vid were the guy mentions this exact fact.
If I'm mistaken could you link me the info? I could be off, but if I am the race will have lost its allure. An ultra mobile and vertical character race sounds awesome.
Wait are you saying since it literally doesnt use the exact words "You can climb walls" you cant use your climb speed to scale a wall? Ending your turn on a wall? Is that what your saying?
Cause you can go watch nerd immersion on youtube were he says Lindsey allowed wall crawling. It's in his newest vid at 11 minutes 15 seconds.
Wait are you saying since it literally doesnt use the exact words "You can climb walls" you cant use your climb speed to scale a wall?
That's usually how the rules work, yeah. I am saying that as written, grung do not have any special wall climbing ability beyond the usual 2 foot of movement = 1 foot climb.
If you want to house rule that, it's 100% your privilege as DM, but I'm simply referring to the rules Chris Lindsey himself provided.
Having a climb speed does not do anything other than allow you to ignore the extra movement costs of climbing. Any ability that would allow you to traverse the ceiling (like Spider Climb) would says so.
example: "Until the spell ends, one willing creature you touch gains the ability to move up, down, and across vertical surfaces and upside down along ceilings, while leaving its hands free. The target also gains a climbing speed equal to its walking speed."
Notice the climb speed is listed as separate ability.
I figured it worked like swimming speed. once you have a swim speed you don't need to roll in normal conditions underwater you just move. same with climb speeds unless the wall is difficult (ice, wet, Super Smooth) you don't need to make the check. unless it's magical your climb speed will require more than just your legs at least 1 hand free. you could climb on the ceiling but that would require a check, a very hard check.
Although you stick to walls and can jump your full movement so maybe you can just jump to a spot and stick; kinda wish they spelled that out better. Also they need to say whether jump distance is tied to movement speed or static because movement speed can change.
They should auto-succeed jump checks unless they want more than just the written distance under normal conditions. same with all characters jumping, grung just get to ignore their strength.
Spiders and snakes are often resistant to venom yet spiders get drunk off caffeine and snakes can definitely be poisoned, so I'd say drugs work. You're probably at least as resistant to pickling as a dwarf maybe immune? It wasn't the intention and your GM gets to decide whether that's how they feel it works.
I had a Grung Ranger in a one shot I played in a couple of weeks ago, it was a well balanced race tbh! He didn't make any melee attacks but there were lots of shenanigans where he stuck to the shield on the back of a Goliath to hide from him. It was hilarious!

My point was just to highlight the one case where it exists in the rules. It wasn't meant as a correction.

Well the grung race as provided by DDB is Chris Lindseys exact version, so I'm not sure which version you're referring to.

Grung are clearly the most superior race in 5e. None can withstand their unbridled might and power.
@ManOfValor I totally agree with you about drinking and levels of drunkenness.
I remember this topic. Ruined by annoying ass rules lawyers before it could even get started...shame.
How have players and DMs dealt with grung in your games? I'm still curious.

I played a Grung Rogue (Scout) for a bit and it was pretty fun. Integrating their caste system into my adventuring party was entertaining.
I'm awaiting an opportunity to use my 1st lvl Rogue - Looking forward to it. Watching the SoA - One Grung Above vid which is entertaining.
