Even if they questioned why I didn't care for it, I would hedge.
Yes, I know there is an integrity of being "brutally honest" but you have to pick your battles. And it's also a relevant social custom not to purposely antagonize people with whom you are trying to make friends.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
*Within 20 minutes begins complaining about thing the group says they enjoy*
*Is shocked to discover that the group doesn't like the new person that much*
To be clear, I don't care about the show one way or another. There are plenty of people that enjoy that style, and plenty who don't. But you shouldn't be surprised at the result here...suggest moving on, for both you and them.
Okay, since I was the only one in this thread that was there (ASFAIK) and a few people seem to be assuming or inventing the flow of things, I want to emphasize, I didn't phrase this as "oh my god, this sucks so much, why would you listen to this crap?".
First I was like "Oh my god, is he ever gonna shut up about the table?"
Then it was like "I don't think I want to go on, the DM's voice is kinda cheesy to me".
I was not intentionally antagonizing people but I was listing the things that turned me off of listening to more. If I wanted to be a dick I could have been much more dickish. I just wasn't prepared for the rabid fanperson-ness of the response.
I’m gonna backtrack on my original stance.
Both of those reasons are stupid and I think the point of this thread was to seek validation for your actions and your stance on the show, which I naively fed into.
There, I’ve hit both sides of the spectrum. Go find a game and play D&D, you’ve probably wasted more time on this thread than Matt Mercer did talking about a table.
I'm sorry if that's how I made you feel. I wasn't trying to. I was hoping to give constructive criticism and an idea of how I would have handled the situation. Not to make you feel bad about yourself.
Written communications is weak when it comes to nuances. I'm sure you'll find a group that you'll seriously enjoy playing with! Just give yourself some time and a lot of leeway with failures.
You spoke openly and gave your immediate opinion of critical role to a group who were fans of the show. I did something similar once so I know your pain. If you can't patch things over with that group, here's hoping you'll find a new one!
It's only an opinion, one that you're perfectly justified to have and share. If you feel that one bad reaction to one voiced opinion is reason enough to leave, then that's your choice.
If you still like the people in that group, your dynamic, and your fun times together--reach out to someone from that group and explain what happened, but hold your ground. You don't like the video, nothing will make you like it, and that's just how it is.
I know there are already a lot of people jumping in to offer their two cents, but there's mine anyway :)
I hope that you can either work things out with these people, or find a more open-minded group.
I kinda hope Mercer and the CR lot see this one day. Itd be nice if they actually addressed how much gatekeeping their fans do. I know Mercer has talked about the mercer effect before and how bad it makes him feel, so hopefully he can voice his thoughts on this topic.
I find a lot of Critters (much like a lot of people who are fanatics of something) to be insufferable, and it puts me off watching CR quite a lot.
There wasn't really a point to this thread, I was mostly whining and complaining about my stupid big mouth getting me into an unpleasant situation and spending a few pages trying to justify it. I think I'm at least starting to gain some awareness of how I come off.
I mostly just came to vent but I think I just made an ass of myself. I wish I could delete this thread now.
Well, if you come to whine about how you put yourself into an unpleasant situation then maybe, you know, listen to the advice that people give you on how to avoid putting yourself into unpleasant situations? You've gotten a lot of very constructive criticism, you should take that to heart. From your last comment it seems that you kind of do, which is good.
As for your questions on what to expect in a tabletop RPG, well it differs. Some people really like the more mundane stuff because it builds characters (and since you've played Baldur's Gate you know that there is both eating and pooping in that game as well) and some people just want to fight stuff or do other stuff. Neither way is more right or wrong than the other but if you go into something with the wrong expectations, you run the risk of being disappointed. The so-called Session Zero is a good way to figure out if a particular game is right or wrong for you.
Even if they questioned why I didn't care for it, I would hedge.

Same principle still applies...

Cheers and Game On!
