I just recently finished the novel Zorro (by Isabel Allende). Since then I been creating Ideas for a "Zorro Character." Well first lets look at the Iconic character. Who is Zorro?
Zorro is a secret identity/alias of a Spanish nobleman Don Diego de la Vega. He was born from a Spanish father an a Native American mother. He lived most of his life in Los Angeles along with a "half-brother" named Bernardo, who is a Native American. He also has a strong sense of justice, fight for the oppressed, and punish the oppressors. Hence this character has a dual personality. Lets look at both of them.
Diego is a nobleman that is oblivious to women and only had a crush once in his life. He is fascinated by the art of the rapier but seems mediocre at it (this is before he forged the Zorro identity). He also appreciate the fine arts. So he will be proficient with Persuasion and History.
Zorro is a cunning vigilante that attacks from the shadows of the night and uses his sheer cunning to deal swift justice. His is very proficient with his weapons of choice the Rapier, the Whip, and the Pistol (which will be a re-skinned Hand Crossbow). Therefore he is proficient in Disguise kit and Deception.
Character Build:
Race: Human (variant) is the best choice but Half-Elf gives a great bonus too.
Human gets a +1 on two ability scores, one skill proficiency, and one feat.
Half-Elf: +2 on Charisma and +1 one two ability scores. You are also a skill monkey for gaining two skill proficiencies of your choice.
Classes: Rouge (Swashbuckler) is the easiest choice for this build. A Fighter (battlemaster) is always a good choice because of the maneuvers I can see Zorro using maneuvers as part of his attacks.
Rouge: You get Expertise (I prefer deception and Insight), Sneak Attack, and Thieves Cant. At level 2 you get Cunning Action. Level 5 you get uncanny dodge.
Swashbuckler uses Fancy Footwork and Rakish Audacity (level 3) to get sneak attack against the enemy who is by himself and no one else is in the party with you. After attempting an attack you can move away like the second condition of the Mobile feat. As a great bonus you add your Charisma modifier to your Imitative. At level 9 you get Panache which has a great bonus to both in and out of combat.
Fighter: You gain a Fighting Style (Dueling, Two-Weapon Fighting, and Defense are the best choice. Second Wind is always useful to have. Action Surge very useful. You get an ability bump at level 6.
Battlemaster grants you Combat Superiority which allows you to do some maneuvers. You gain 4 superiority die (1d8) and 3 maneuvers of your choice. These following maneuvers are great for this build. At level 7 you gain an additional 2 maneuvers and 1 superiority die.
Disarming attack
Distracting strike
Evasive footwork
Feinting attack
Goading attack
Menacing attack
Parry
Precision attack
Pushing attack
Riposte (a definite must because you can get an extra sneak attack)
Trip attack
Multiclassing: Pick Fighter level 1. Then take 4 levels of Rouge (swashbuckler) then take 7 more levels of fighter. With this result you can be level 12 and have 4 Ability Score improvement. The rest of the levels are up to you.
Stats: Dexterity, Charisma, Intelligence, and Constitution are the stats you should build in that order.
Feats:
Alert: +5 initiative (with swashbuckler you can have a max of +15 initiative)
Actor: Very important if you expect to switch through your guises.
Athlete: A good choice especially if you want to conserve your movement.
Crossbow Expert: Allows the player to remove the loading quality on crossbows, allows to shoot in melee without penalties, and get a bonus action with a hand crossbow.
Defensive Duelist: Use rapier to add your proficiency bonus to AC as a reaction is a good choice for a swashbuckler swordsman and out of superiority dice.
Dual Wielder: Rapier/whip combo plus +1 AC
Keen mind: Great for memorizing details but not very great in combat but great in homebrew campaigns
Linguistic: again great for homebrew campaign
Lucky: A great feat.
Martial Adept: Learn 2 maneuvers and gain one superiority die (1d6)
Medium Armor Master: Medium armor no longer pose disadvantage and the max dexterity bonus becomes +3
Mobile: Extra move speed but with swashbuckler is almost useless.
Mounted Combatant: Zorro has a horse. Gain advantage to a creature smaller than your mount. Advantage = Sneak Attack
Observant: +5 to passive perception and can read lips from a distance
Sentinel: protect your squishy teammates. You can possibly get sneak attack off.
Skulker: Most people forget the other benefits besides being concealed after missing a range attack. Dim light doesn't oppose disadvantage and you can hide by being lightly obscured.
