Rogues might not be the strongest class, or the most useful, but they are great for roleplaying. However, if you know the right build, they can be good for both! Heres a step by step guide for building the best rogue character. At level five.
Let's start with preferences, shall we?
Preferences: Homebrew, crit, UA, and noncore on. Some of the playtest feats can come really in handy. You can turn off coin encumberance, but I always leave it on. It encourages you to spend your coins before you get too many.
Race: Wood Elf. Oftentimes people say these are the worst elf type, but for a rogue or ranger they are amazing. The ability to completely hide yourself in snow, rain, leaves, or really anything can come super in handy. Not to mention the DEX bonus, which is super useful as a stealth character.
Class Features (up to lvl 5): Stealth, SOH, Acrobatics, and Deception. The proficiency part is easy. The hard part is picking an expertise. I always go for stealth and acrobatics, because unless you are planning on pulling off any heists, the other options don't add much to encounters. Best Archetype is probably Phantom, Thief is ok but too bland, soul knife is way too complicated, and tbh not that great. I always apply my "whispers of the dead" feature to Disguise Kit proficiencies, either that or a set of tools that are useful in my current situation.
When you get to 4th level, most people opt out of the feats rule in order to take an ASI (Ability Improvement). Don't. Use the feat to get two weapon fighting, it can be really useful. You already get a bonus action, but you never use it because it has awful uses. So, instead, take the two-weapon fighting and use two shortswords. That way you get an extra attack.
Abilities: I always try to get a total bonus of +10 or 12. DEX should be you main stat, of course. But, contrary to what the book says, you should put CON before INT. The bonus to AC is super useful. After CON comes INT, then CHA, and have STR be the dump stat.
Backgorund: Anything works, but the starting gear for Spy makes it the most useful. DO this section based on what you want your character to be!
Equipment: Remember that dual-wielding feat from earlier? Here's where it comes in. Get yourself a pair of shortswords, you might want to pick gold over starting equipment for this. Customize one of them to give it the dual-wield property. Now, you're all set!
