I prefer to run games that are rules-lite. Today's online platforms incorporate so much automation. I like having a "tabletop" or "board" to draw on and have images, but I have spent countless hours of preparation time for online games. Yes, it makes a lot of things super easy and nice, but I want something a little more free form.
I have decided to try a combo of Discord and AWWapp (A Web Whiteboard application) to form a super simple set up. I need to test it out and see how I manage things on my end as the DM.
Roll your own dice (digitally or real dice), use whatever kind of character sheet/notes you want to. I will be using Voice chat, so a mic will be required.
This type of game will focus more on "theater of the mind" than fancy, pre-drawn maps. Your actions will be more up to your descriptions than the rules and dice.
Gameplay like this will require mature players that aren't trying to "win D&D." This style of gameplay is more about an impromptu creative experience. Have fun. Roll dice. See what happens. If you think you can't handle the temptation to fudge dice rolls because they won't be on a public screen, then this game isn't for you. If you think you will be tempted to argue that something isn't in the rules or isn't being done by the rules, this game isn't for you.
The whole idea is still in its concept stages. I have to go to the day job for now.
My days off are typically Thursdays and Fridays.
If anyone is interested in goofing around and testing anything out tonight, I will be off work around 9 PM MDT.
You don't need to purchase anything or install anything.
You will need a device (tablet, phone, PC), mic, headphones (preferably), Discord account, dice (digital or real), a way to take notes, maybe email (???), a good attitude, and imagination.
You officially know as much as I do (at the time of this writing).
The setting is Monte Cook's Ptolus: City by the Spire.
It is an old d20/3rd edition campaign setting.
The games will be focused on city politics and on delving deep into the labyrinthine dungeons below the city (that could very well tunnel to the depth's of Hell).
Ok... maybe I'm going to use Roll20 again for the game board.
If I want the "premium" features of the AWWapp, I'm going to have to pay the same amount that I would have to pay for Roll20.
Still sticking with minimal automation and minimal electronic preparation.
Roll20 has pretty much all the same features I would use with AWWapp, so if I have to pay for one, the obvious choice is Roll20. I know I don't HAVE to pay for Roll20, but they have some strict storage limits (even if you pay).
I still want to use Discord for voice. I run my sound effects and music through Discord.
I will be making a post over at the Roll20 site soon...

Hello folks!
I'm looking to try a new online gaming setup.

Let me know if you are interested!
