Brief Synopsis: In Tarot, the Tower represents how quickly and violently life can change. The card is often depicted as a bolt of lightning striking an unknown structure, with fire filling the air and broken stones poised to crush those below. It is no surprise that the card is often read as an ill omen. And, yet, the art only captures the very moment of impact. It fails to reflect the terror of the people near the tower. It fails to show the devastation of the tower's collapse. And it fails to reveal what happens after the dust settles. The card represents only the beginning of a disaster.
This observation is important to understand, as the Tower is merely the first card of many that will be drawn for this particular story...
Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online (Absolutely Free to Play) Experience: New / a few years / veteran Location/Timezone: TBD, but I'm in EST. Schedule: Once every two weeks Roles sought: 4-6 Players Game style: See below
Themes: - Permadeath - Class Disparity (First-Class vs Second-Class Citizens) - Everyday Magic - War / Violence - Religion - The Underworld (Demons)
Setting: Homebrew world. While we will follow the vast majority of 5e rules, this world exists wholly separate to worlds like Faerûn (The Forgotten Realms) and Greyhawk (World of Greyhawk). Because of this, there are significant restrictions regarding species and class. It should be noted that this is a test world. It was created to help flesh out some writing ideas.
Atmosphere: Magic is essential to this world. Because nearly half of the known population can wield at least some form of magic, it is quite common for an individual's profession to directly relate to their abilities. For example, individuals who excel at fire magic or earth magic might be more likely to be a blacksmith. Similarly, individuals with a penchant for water or plant-based magic might be healers or seers. But most importantly, the power of someone's magical ability dictates their status within society. Powerful sorcerers and wizards make up the royalty of the nation and the majority of nobility-- they use gold and Æther with near impunity.
The truly unfortunate ones in this society are those without any magical talent whatsoever. Called "Empties" or "Ungifted," they make up less than half of the population... but provide a disproportionate amount of service to the nation serving in the farm-fields and the military. By royal decree, individuals without any magical power are required to spend either 10 years working the fields or 5 years in the military.
Play Style: - Mix of both combat and roleplaying - Likely mature themes - More gritty than cinematic - Serious - Mostly preplanned, but not railroaded
Notes: - Campaign would begin (maybe) late January 2025 or early February 2025. - Session 0 is a must. - Characters will begin at level 0 (Peasant)
I'm interested in possibly joining and my time zone is est as well. My experience with D&D 5e is that I've been both a player and dungeon master for over 5 years. I can be reached on discord the quickest at UrsolBallic
Old greybeard, here. Been TTRPG since 1979. Relatively new to 5E, knowing nearly nothing about the variety of things available under the 2014 rules, but familiar with the 2024 PHB material. I have seen examples of DMs afraid of how 2024 Weapon Mastery rules will break the system, while encouraging people to use 2014 variant sub-classes that explicitly ignore both resistances and immunities. The devil you know is always safer than the one you don't, I guess.
Sounds interesting. Could be quite the role-play opportunity. I am Central US time zone (Texas).
I didn't specify above, but I'd like to use the 2024 PHB in its entirety. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. You still interested?
I should warn though that this is still in the infancy stages. I'm still getting players and details hammered out. If so, I'll send you a discord link.
Ace, Snap, and Huston - Replied to all three of you in private messages.
For those still interested, I would like to note that I am looking for the RIGHT players. Whether you're new or experienced with the game matters less than your willingness to contribute meaningfully to the world and the story.
However, I should mention that homebrews (like this one) can be run quite differently than your standard Forgotten Realms setting. In that regard, new players beware. If you are looking for very typical party and adventure, like the Mines if Phandelver or Descent to Avernus, you might not feel at ease here.
That being said, I am 100% willing to get you going. :)
Hello! I have not played in about four years but I've been trying to run a group and have brushed up on both old and new handbooks. Willing to join as your premise sounds interesting if a spot is still available!
Howdy Horizons, I'm rather interested in the setting from what's been detailed thus far. I'm a relative greenhorn when it comes to proper D&D and have been looking for a campaign where I'd be able to properly sink my teeth in and give it a proper go for a decent bit now.
I might need a hand here or there with the systems at times, but otherwise I'm relatively comfortable with the format due to my time with other similar games. Cheers for your time in advance.
I am continuing to look for the right players for this game. I'm interested in creating an awesome story with people and continuing to flesh out the world. This is likely to be a slow process, so you're welcome to come by and see how things are being developed.
But an important note that I didn't think needed to be said: this is **NOT//NOT a paid game**. Oh heavens, I couldn't fathom being paid to DM.
So far:
The world will be level-locked. The strongest a normal person can get (without otherworldly influence) is level 5.
The most veteran and experienced (normal) person in an army or town will be level 5.
Levels exist beyond this, but they are the exception rather than the rule. Anyone level 6 or higher would be individuals who have found magical secrets, incredible items, made pacts with the Profane, or been blessed by the Divine. Royalty, for example, falls into this category.
I’m interested! A little hesitant cos not massively familiar with 2024 and never played level locked before but love the world and lore and have a char idea if you’ll let me discuss/ask some questions! Discord is: avengingsoul
