Please do read the above in order (1.0, 2.0, and 3.0). I apologize for grammatical and various spelling errors, please do not let that spoil what you imagine :).
Everything else will be developed as we play and based on character backgrounds/backstory.
Our last campaign lasted about 18 years (from level 1 to 30) with real life changing all of us along the way. We have no set "end" date for this campaign. We play as long as we're having fun. When we started 5e many of us could not commit to play (life obligations). Three (3) of us started a new campaign. We're recently recruited a new friend from Regina, SK. And looking for 1-2 new people to come along for the ride (however long it may be). We're not sure about max group size. Our goal is to play consistently every week. So we want a group size that can play even if we're down 2-3 people.
Everyone is quite experienced with Dungeons and Dragons. However, we do have varying degrees of experience. So that's not a barrier.
DM has over 20+ years experience with Dungeons and Dragons. All of that was 2nd Edition. We jumped straight to 5e for this campaign.
Schedule
We run Fridays starting between 9:30pm ending at about 1:30am - Saskatchewan Time (Central Standard Time) (UTC -6)
We're in our 30s (one person in 20s), some of us have family/life commitments so we work hard to stick to the schedule to respect everyone's time.
Tools/Requirements
Solid Internet Connection
DnDBeyond.com free account.
Microsoft Account (for OneDrive file sharing with DM and Players, @hotmail.com or @outlook.com will do).
Discord for Text, Voice, and Video
Good Microphone/Webcam
DnDBeyond.com
As DM and new to 5e I decided to sign up for DnDBeyond. I have the Legendary Bundle with Master Subscription. I did not charge my current players for this (although some contributed voluntarily). I intend to buy everything as it is released and I will NOT expect anyone else to pay anything. However, if people wish to contribute I will accept eTransfers.
As a result, we will homebrew what we need within the toolset, but will not use anything outside of DnDBeyond. The only exception we made was for the Warlock Patron - Celestial. As that will be formally included in Xanathar's Guide to Everything in November.
I never use pre-made adventures. I just like having all the new spells, magic items, and other reference material available for myself and the players.
Everything to do with your character needs to be on the DnDBeyond Character sheet. The OneDrive share we use is to save a PDF copy (in case DnD Beyond ever goes down during a game), art assets (character images from which I can clip portraits if needed), NPC images, maps, etc.
New Player Preferences
We're running a heroic campaign so we're not entertaining evil characters (that includes people who want to start evil and turn good). As such alignments of LG, NG, CG, NN are welcome (CN may be tolerated :P but are walking a fine line, you will need to convince me why CN)
Newcomers can choose NOT to be Enu-Touched (perfectly ok and in fact could be interesting for the story).
Rules
Avoid OP Characters. I posted everyone's current stats so that anyone rolling a character for this campaign has an idea where they fit. I'm generous with starting rolls and want people to like their characters. But avoid min/maxing throughout the game.
Starting rolling is done as following:
4d6 drop lowest. Do this 6 times. That forms your first set. You can reorder them any way you want.
Roll 5 sets in total. Select the set you like best.
DM will roll 5d6 drop two lowest. You can sub this result to replace any one roll from your chosen set. So for example if your best set rolled:
18, 17, 12, 10, 9, 7 and the DM rolled 17. You could replace the 7 with 17 (or any one of the numbers of your choosing).
We do NOT use miniatures. Not because they aren't cool but because
I have little children who will mess them up and then I'll go into a Hulk Rage.
Very difficult to make them work in an online game
Having said that I am looking at virtual options should we need them. In all my years, we've used our imagination just fine. When in doubt, DM is always right :P.
Stick with the group. Always try to stay together. If people's ego or RP extremeness makes them want to walk away that's ok. However, I DM the majority, so be ready to roll another character that will want to be with the group. I've done campaigns where I have to constantly get the group to WANT to stay together because of extreme alignment differences or character motivations. Good experience I learned a lot :). Not doing it with a mix of strangers (IRL). Let's just play together and have fun. I'm 100% ok with secrets between characters, but that should serve as a plot device that adds fun to everyone down the road.
Share airtime with all players equally, and let each other try to be cool without trying to hog the glory all the time.
Maintain a good sense of humor. Always remember we are here to have fun. However, do NOT degenerate into continuous silliness.
Keep Outside of Game and Inside of Game knowledge separate. I've shared a lot of Outside of Game and Inside of Game knowledge (see linked documents above). Keeping the two separate is the best way to have the most fun. Characters can have secrets. Players can as well. But less so within a gaming context.
About Us (Fit)
We're using 5e ruleset, but are new to it. So we're learning from one another
We are not highly charged or emotional group (drama-free)
People like/love their characters. However, as a fair DM, the challenge I bring week to week may see your character killed. I'm not out to kill the players. But rather see if you can become the stuff of legends. That doesn’t come without trials and tribulations.
Honor System - dice are rolled with actual real dice (I would never take away a player's dice for some digital rolling tool, that is sacrilege). What that means is that you need to be able to keep yourself honest. If you know you can't then don't contact me or reply to this thread.
We are striving to play every Friday regularly. Exceptions will arise, but we ask those be few and far between.
We're open and welcoming to new people
What we are Looking for
1 or 2 more players who are willing to join at Level 6 (exact experience total will be discussed when I chat with you).
People who find the setting interesting and want to help build it via communal storytelling
Ideally willing to balance out the current group but not necessary (I remember playing Final Fantasy 1 with 4 black mages :) )
Mid-level experience with Dungeons and Dragons
Comfortable and enjoy playing via Discord
Able to commit to the weekly schedule outlined above
Enjoy creative writing (I like asking people to put together their descriptions and update them from time to time. If you need to find images online to supplement descriptions that's great).
Positive minded that bring no baggage with them to the group or game
Patient - I've switched over a paper system into a digital system for online play, and am still tweaking it to run smooth.
Collaborative - as DM I will do my best to create a story that involves the wishes and desires of players. But that cannot happen if we don't chat about what you'd like out of the game/campaign.
Fluent English speakers
Bonus: An involved community member on DnDBeyond forums, don't want haters but people who are trying to help Curse make a better product over time rather than whine and complain about all the things the tool does not do. For better or worse my group and I have tossed our lot with DnDBeyond.
How to Join the Campaign
1) Review the document links I shared above
2) Send me a PM letting me know
a) What you'd be interested in playing (character/class)
b) A short backstory for your character. Since you're joining at Level 6, you're likely already in/experienced Enpont, have passed the trials and are either in a Leaderless Guild or another one (which you can make up). However, try to stick with Leaderless as that is most flexible to join the group. You CANNOT be a member of one of the top guilds (as your guild obligations would make it difficult to hang out with the main group). You can also decided to have nothing to do with the Enu and be a regular adventurer.
c) A little bit about the real you, and what you want out of the game of Dungeons and Dragons
d) Anything relevant that would help us know you're a good fit for the group.
Our next game is scheduled for Friday, September 15, 2017 at 9:30pm (we decided to make sure we had plenty of time for new people to join, build characters and give me time to do my best to make the difficulty level appropriate.
My thanks to everyone who reads this. I will edit this post once we have found enough players.
P.S. I'm no Matt Mercer :P - Critical Role is awesome, I'm a fan. I wish I could be as great a DM as him, and I work to be better ever session.
NOTE: You will need to setup a zendesk account (which is not your DnDBeyond.com account, the team uses this 3rd party software). It's easy to do and your votes are needed!
