The world of Kozlite has been plagued by war in the past, but the most recent ones have been the most brutal and brought about great chaos in the world. In this chaos, some people have theorized that greater evils are approaching (the most common theory: that an army of fiends is awaiting the perfect moment to begin their incursion). Cults have been forming to bring about this end, while other groups have been doing everything in their power to stop it. The responsibility to protect the world will fall on the shoulders of whatever heroes can rise to the occasion.

I am a DM with moderate experience, but this will be my first time DMing a play-by-post game.
I am looking for 5-8 players that can post pretty frequently (I will post mostly during the day in my time zone: GMT-7). This campaign will be a mix of roleplay and combat. Once the players have been established I will create an out-of-character chat and then later a gameplay threat (the campaign will start as soon as everyone is ready, but no later than July 10th). In the out-of-character chat before the game starts the players can determine what kind of leveling they want and any other relevant rules.
Posting expectations: If you don't post on a given day it is assumed that you just follow along with the party and don't say much. If you don't post what you do in combat then I will take a turn for you with some whatever your basic actions are. For combat, I will roll everyone's initiative and post the turn order before the combat.

If you are interested in playing please post your application here. Character creation rules are that all characters start at 5th level and can be any class on DnDBeyond and can play any official race. Homebrew is allowed if I approve it. When generating stats you can roll (rerolls ones once) or use Point Buy (you can elect to use Point Buy after rolling). You can use all TCOE optional features and can multiclass if you want. You can use fixed HP or roll (rerolling ones). We will be using variant encumbrance but everyone starts with a feat. All characters start with their base starting equipment (and can "sell" items they don't want for 90% the written price) as well as an additional 500 gp and 2 magic item points (which you spend to buy a magic items with the following cost - which is halved for consumable items: common = 0.5 point, uncommon = 1 point, rare = 2 point). If you want to buy any magic items with your additional gold PM me for their price, and when you buy magic items add the cost of the base item if applicable (for instance, to buy magic armor you must have or buy the base armor). When writing an application, please submit it in the following format:

Character Name: Kairynna
Race: Eladrin
Class: Paladin (Oath of Redemption)
Background: Doctor (custom, sent you a pm. I can switch it if you want)
Backstory:
Kairynna grew up within her small tribe deep in the woods. There she studied medicine and would often travel to nearby villages to aid them. Often she would bring her younger sister with her. Together they traveled much of the nearby area. While Kairynna treated the sick, her sister, Bricena, would travel the town and listen for news of the wider world. Bricena began to make friends with some of the youth of the town who would often disappear to play games in the woods. After a few years of traveling to the towns, Kairynna noticed her sister was becoming more and more withdrawn from her family and spent more and more time with the village youth. Thinking her sister was just being a rebellious teen, Kairynna thought little of it. Soon after, the village she was treating sick in, was attacked by a strange demonic creature that emerged from the woods. Kairynna hid until it was eventually slain after going on a deadly rampage. Hurrying into the woods, she found her sister and a few of the youths hiding in a small cave. Deeper in the cave, Kairynna could see the corpses of the other teens in a blood soaked ritual circle. Bricena told her that they had been told by a strange man, that the world was about to be attacked by fiends and only by supplicating to them, could they and their families be spared. This was supposed to be the final ritual. Kairynna hurried her sister home and Bricena was forced to stay home for her own safety. Upon hearing what the creature had done, Bricena withdrew even more into herself until eventually she died. Upon finding her sister's body, Kairynna cried out an oath that she would let no one else be tricked into this evil and she would save all she could. Grabbing her medicines, she set out into the world to bring back the light.

I would be okay with that. It sounds like a fun idea for a side story arc at some point. If you decide to go with that character you can PM me about which deity you might serve.
Backstory:Varis, young by elven standards and without some of the patience and temperance that comes with age, is a talented scholar and capable swordsman. He had some initial training as a warrior within his elven community, mixing the application and art of magic with the skill of the sword, and has fought in the wars of the past. But his first love was research and arcane studies. He spent countless hours laboring over scrolls and forgotten texts, trying to unlock the secrets and mysteries of the high elf civilizations of old. He believes knowledge is the path to true power and will go to great lengths to uncover information. Pulled by the draw of secrets to be had in the wider world, he left his idyllic community in search of more, especially with rumors of greater evils on the wind.
Stats: 10 20 14 16 13 8 (rolled above plus racial and level 4 increase.
Race: Tiefling (using +1 dex instead of +1 intelligence)
Class: Bard (4), Rogue (1)
Background: Criminal/Spy
Backstory:
Morilius Arwyn was born into a dangerous life, in a city filled with unrighteous people. Morilius's mother shielded him from these evils, however, and whenever there were loud fights in the streets outside, she would play music on her flute. When Morilius became a teenager, his mother became very ill, but could not pay for medical attention. Morilius made it his goal to save her, and so he stole from the unrighteous people of the city. Learned to steal from those who stole, and in his mind, that was the best way to do it. These people deserved it, and in his mind, he was undoubtedly in the right. He scraped together the gold to pay for his mother's medical attention, but found himself drawn back to the life of crime he had assumed, even when his goal had been achieved. Morilius started to steal again, but this time, with a lack of his ideals. Started to steal from those who didn't deserve it, and became no better than those he originally had stolen from. But taking shiny things, having wealth or something he could flaunt, was a craving he could not deny himself.
Morilius joined a group of dragonborns who roamed the streets, preying on the weak and taking their gold. The heists got larger and larger, but Morilius never allowed himself to think twice, because the reward was too large. One particular heist, Morilius was working with a particular dragonborn. Morilius was supposed to share the earnings of the heist with this dragonborn, as they orchestrated it together, but giving into his selfish desires, he kept the winnings entirely for himself. The dragonborn was furious, and when Morilius got back to his house, he witnessed his mother--the woman he had always wanted to protect--being taken from her home and being arrested. Morilius was wanted across the city for his crimes, but no one had been able to track him down before. But the dragonborn had ratted him out, and now his mother would be in jail for the crimes he committed as a selfish crook.
Morilius was so distraught he decided to retire his life of crime. He grabbed his mother's last belonging--her flute, and set off on a journey to find himself, and find forgiveness in himself. He has changed himself for the better, and is now a more positive and outgoing person, who loves to play music and help people. But every once and a while, Morilius will get the familiar urge to take something valuable, and he can't always stop himself.
Race: Scourge Aasimar (Replaced +2 charisma with +2 wisdom)
Class: Druid Circle of Stars
Background: Far Traveler
Backstory:
Nevaeh is a scourge aasimar Circle of Stars druid. She claims to be a foreign traveler in these lands, but that is not really the whole truth. In reality, she is far from home, but that is because she isn't simply an aasimar - she is a fallen star. She fell from the sky and awoke with a mortal form. She has no memory of how or why she was cast down from the sky, but when she awoke she was about to be sacrificed by a mysterious masked cult. Nevaeh's aasimar and druidic abilities, manifestations of her stellar powers, awoke and she used them to escape the cult's clutches, and now has devoted herself to learning more about this conflict-ridden world, figuring out why she was cast down from the sky, and how to return there, if it's even possible. Nevaeh also has vague memories of falling to earth with other lost stars, and is hoping to reconnect with them and learn what she can of their fate.
Sounds like a lot of fun! Certainly flexible on the character but here is something I have been thinking about for a while.
Character Name: Braci the Wanderer
Race: High Half-Elf
Class: Monk, Way of the Astral Self
Background: Urchin
Backstory:
Ever since he was a child Braci knew he was different. Perhaps it was the way he moved or the way he looked, not quite human not quite elf. But as he was reminded time and time again, different is not a good thing on the streets. He fought often, sometimes for food other times for shelter sometimes for no reason at all. Braci was good at fighting but that did not stop people for coming after him and the little he had. One stormy night Braci was fortunate to find a shelter in a dark, lonely alleyway. As he sat staring at the rain and was accosted by a group of 5 older boys looking for shelter. He took a beating that night like he never had before. Near death, bleeding with his face down in a rancid gutter he vowed to change his lot. But how could he? He had no sense of self, no identity. It was then he decided he would leave the city, not to find family he couldn't care less about them, but to find himself. If he died so be it but it wouldn't be choking on sewer water in an alley.
The very next day he left. Surviving was something he was good at. He learned to live off the land and occasionally the kindness of others. And so he explored and traveled looking for something to give his life meaning. One evening, camping along the road he encountered a small group of highwaymen. Typically he would give a group such as this plenty of space and he would take cover till they passed. This group seemed occupied and did not notice him hiding in the brush.
They appeared to be arguing with oddly dressed dwarf. Braci had seen many robberies and muggings, clearly these men meant to take whatever the dwarf carried, though that did not appear to be much. Not one to stand by Braci leapt to help the Dwarf but as he did two ethereal arms that resembled those of an elf sprung into existence. The dwarf and those arms moved in harmony viscously striking down the men. As Braci reached the fight it had already drawn to a swift conclusion.
Without looking at him the dwarf smirked and said, "I wondered if you would come out of hiding, names Rurik. 'preciate the effort." Rurik explained he was part of small order of monks dedicated to the exploration of the inner self, the soul. Pushing beyond the limitations of the body to define one's true self. Never in his life did words ring so true and when Rurik offered to escort him to the Monastery Braci could not contain his excitement. And so the two traveled together and Braci joined the order. Finally he had purpose and a chance at self discovery.
Braci trained hard and his work was rewarded. He remained friends with Rurik who taught him card games and even to speak dwarven. He learned the secrets of astral projection but his manifestations were always off. His astral arms would be human at times, sometimes elven sometimes a mixture. It seemed the discovery of his soul, his inner self still eluded him. He had hit a wall, without better understanding himself he would never be able to further his abilities and more importantly find his purpose. With a heavy heart he left the monks, thankful for what he learned and the years they helped him but he needed more to find his inner self.
This is Braci's true beginning. He wandered the land searching for himself but helping others in the process. His hope that one day his inner self would manifest and he could have meaning to his life.
Tayvello was a normal human child before being stolen away as a baby by a coven of hags hoping to use him to replace a recently fallen member transforming him into a hexblood. Raising the child to think one of the hags was his mother while the others where his aunts they taught him how to create and use tokens made from his hair allowing him to speak or even see over long distances, using this ability Tayvello would explore the world outside the coven hoping to one day leave. When he grew to a young man Tayvello discovered his true origins and the reason he was stolen, fearing the lose of himself Tayvello fled the coven.
On the third day of running, near dead from hunger, Tayvello met a wandering sellsword, a teifling by the name of Islinn. Islinn seeing the magic worked on the young man took him in knowing few others would otherwise. In time Islinn would teach Tayvello how to wield a blade and the dark magic within him in concurrency, it was different but similar to how Islinn himself wielded both the blade and arcane. After Islinn felt Tayvello was skilled enough to take to the battle field he introduced Tayvello to his contacts so Tayvello could take up his own jobs. Few years later Tayvello has made a decent name for himself among sellswords going from battlefield to battlefield where ever he is needed. Recently Tayvello has begun having nightmares of the hag coven calling him back to finish his transformation.
