You have all gathered to a small town in the Alabaster Sierras, a humble little place on a hill, surrounded by a forest. A grand, autumnal tree stands in the center, amber leaves cloaking the town square. A tall, bold, half-elven man stands on one of the higher roots, his long, braided hair, black with a streak of white, blows in the wind. He wears polished, well-made plate armor, a mace sheathed at his side and a large shield in his hand. He speaks to the crowd gathered around the tree, and this is where your adventure begins.
He stands regally, a large detailed image of a sun emblazoned on his shield. He begins to speak after a moment of cheering. “Let get to the core of the matter. If you’re a farmer, a child, someone elderly, or a guard, you are fine to leave or not participate. For the rest of you, those of you with nothing to lose or some adventuring experience, listen up. We’ve been having… issues with a cave that has recently been discovered not far outside of the town. We’ve lost multiple people to the creatures inside, so this is not for the faint of heart.”
However, you may have tuned him out, in noticing a hooded figure leaning against the tree, seemingly attentive. The figure speaks briefly with a goliath, before the goliath yells something at him and storms off. The crowd slowly disperses, filled with mumbles. You watch the regal half-elven man start to walk off.
Having completing his cleric training, Calder had been on the road making his way back to his home village of Baregrove from the large city of Whitestone. Having arrived in this town a few days ago, being along the road home, he decided to stay a couple of nights to rest up for his remaining trip. Currently, the olive skinned, shaggy headed cleric is seen resting under the eave of a nearby merchant's shop picking the remnants of his meal out of his teeth with a small knife as he watches the half-elf describe some trouble the town is have in a nearby cave. Continuing to watch, he notices the the exchange between the hooded figure and goliath, and rubs his unshaven chin at the curious interaction of the tow.
As the crowd disperses, Calder makes his way toward the half-elf. Being the pragmatic sort and being low on coin, he thinks to himself: People tend to pay well to handle their problems for them. A little extra gold will do good since I do enjoy a nice meal each night if I can afford it. He approaches from behind and taps on the shoulder of the half-elf. "So what more can you tell me about this problem you're having in the cave?"
OOC: I think we should all pick the same starting level. Since the DM suggests either 1, 2 or 3 I say we just split the difference and start at level 2.

Plus, I do enjoy a nice meal each night if I can afford it. He approaches from behind and taps on the shoulder of the half-elf. "So what more can you tell me about this problem you're having in the cave?"
The half-elf turns to you. "People have been disappearing into it. Some farmers from the area hear whispers coming from it at night." He turns away from you to answer a question from one of the townspeople.
My name is Dark Sight. I came to this region because of the rumors of certain... activity, and in search of a powerful tome, which I believe to be somewhere nearby. I've seen glimpses of the horrors that hide just outside of civilization and some very interesting creatures that are plaguing this area in my dreams. I realize that I won't be able to face them alone. I need to partner up with some adventurers and get that tome before something terrible happens, even if it means there must be sacrifices.
I feel like I've known this half-elf a long time, and that he has something to tell me. I approach the half-elf and introduce myself.
"Pleasure to meet you um, sorry - I didn't catch your name? I feel like we have met before, perhaps in a past life. I'm looking for the local adventurers guild. I need to join up with an expedition in order to locate something that is very important to me. Could you point me in the right direction?"

"I'm North DeRolo." The half-elven man answers you. "If you're looking for an adventurers guild, go to Vasselheim and find the Slayer's Take."
Half-orcs stood out anywhere, especially in backwater little towns in the Alabaster Sierras. Stuck in this town already for two nights, Kenari could not pay with the lint in her purse. The green skinned half-Orc was broke and in need of coin. The mingling of people in the town near the Autumnal Tree piqued her interest. The tall Blood Hunter stood at the back. She could see over the others to the armored half-elf who dismissed the farmers. Her eyes narrowed at his words.
If there was a possibility of fiends, that meant, she could hunt. Approaching the recruiter, she said, direct and to the point. "You need people to search this cave so I volunteer."

OOC: Kenari is already Lvl 2.
The half-elf, already swamped with questions and surrounded, sees you, taller than most of the rest of the crowd, and pushes his way towards you after hearing you. "Thank you for volunteering, meet me at the castle gate. Tell the guards you were instructed by North DeRolo."
Calder notices the gathering of the others who may, or may not, be looking to help out. He turns to Kenari, "So you looking to help out with this situation too? Why don't we check things out together? Two heads being better than one...so they say. Hehe." Calder turns back to North DeRolo, "Uh, Ser DeRolo, is it? Has anyone come back from this cave after seeing what's inside?"

"One man went in. Barely came back." North responds quickly, clearly trying to manage about twenty people at once.
Kenari grunted her acceptance. "Fine, we do it together."The invitation had surprised her since most humans tended not to stay around half-orcs for the most part. Still, it would be useful when needing to question that guard at the barracks. Noting the gnome, she looked down and gravelly asked, "You with this human here? Come with us, then." The half-elf was swarmed by a crowd. He didn't seem the type who learned how to manage people.
"He said to meet him at the castle gate. We can ask him more questions," she shared the information. "Quietly,"she thought to bring up an advantage to having the de Rolo out of the crowd.
Wary of crowds and others in general, Gus surveys the scene around the tree from a distance. Tall and lean, even by half-orc standards, standing at over seven feet tall with grey/green skin and pale blue eyes, he has learned to be cautious around groups before making his approach.
Curious about the half-elf’s mention of the cave he trails the group heading towards the castle gate, mumbling to himself “seems like there will be some action after all, perhaps I find some clues about my origins.”
A bit taken aback after being addressed directly by Kenari, Dark Sight takes a moment to think the situation over. "I'd be happy to lend a hand now, in exchange for one later." He replies.
"The Slayer's Take" he says under his breath if as if to help himself remember, and turns to follow Kenari.
alright, sorry, i had some trouble findng my way to this thread. so, anyway, my character arrived, and heard Kenari and Dark Sight discussing the cave. i knew that the cave had to be dealt with, and decided that with the training i had received, i would be able to help. so, later, i come up to the group, and say:
"i have reason to want to deal with this cave, and i heard you discussing doing something about it. seeing as i know i have to help out with the cave, but am not skilled enough to handle the problem on my own, i wish to work with the two of you. i believe i could be quite some help."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Gus, who has not uttered a sound, suprises the group and remarks “We should question the injured guard, Leore, immediately. He could succumb to his injuries at any moment and we may miss the chance learn what he encountered in the cave.”
”Let us speak more with this DeRolo, press Leore, and learn what we can.”
Gus then fades back to the perimeter, intently watching DeRolo and his internactions with the townsfolk.

Calder nods in agreement with Gus, "Yes, let's give Mr. DeRolo here a chance to deal with this crowd. We can gather more information from him when we visit him at the castle." The cleric looks back and forth to the others before him, "By the way, name's Calder. Pleased to meet you, I'm sure."

OOC: Damn.
As you walk away you hear some townspeople talk about lost cattle, family, and a couple whispered voices about a hooded man. North looks stressed, and tries to answer all questions as quickly as he can. "Yes- Ma'am, I can't allow you to come- Be careful with the boy- The cave is unstable, so we must be quick-" He continues to answer questions, but the rest of the information is useless to you.

"Time may be short, DeRolo believes the cave to be unstable, and townsfolk are wary of the hooded stranger seen speaking with the goliath."
"Good to know," Calder replies to Gus. "Some keen ear you've got there. I'm sure that will come in useful at the cave."
