You head down stairs to find a dimly lit dungeon complete with a shrine to Sargonnas at the back of the room. On the altar you see a dying man bleeding from his belly. He's missing an arm and a leg, but the wounds have been cauterized and sewn shut. To the left of the altar is another man in a cage, presumably next in line for the same grizzly fate.
And in the center of the room, eyes wide with fear is Dana, holding a dagger to her own throat preparing to plunge it in.
Sera acted on instinct, her thoughts racing but unfocused as she tried to understand the scene before her. A follower of Sargonnas threatening to cut her own throat? It seemed out of character—weren’t his disciples supposed to be more warlike, more ruthless in their strength?
Pushing those questions aside, Sera focused on the immediate danger. She moved cautiously, circling around to position herself closer to the altar where a man lay gutted and bleeding out. If she could get close enough, she might be able to cast Healing Word and save him before it was too late.
Her voice was steady, calm, and as friendly as she could manage given the tension in the air. “Listen,” she said softly to the desperate woman, “you don’t need to do this. Think about it—if you go through with this, won’t it all be for nothing?”
Sera hoped her words would reach her, even as her heart pounded in her chest.
“Try not to harm her!” The man in the cage shouted at the group as he lunged against the cage bars. “She’s just as much a victim as anyone here!”
”But kill that guy!” He points to the man on the altar.
The man in the cage is dressed in a simple cloth tunic that has a distinctive set of colors. His short, ruddy brown hair just covers a pair of pointed ears.
"I will not suffer for what I've done here! It was justice! They-they deserved everything I've done to them! Stay back! They deserved it!" Dana's voice is quivering and desperate. She's not screaming. Her voice is almost soft as. But there is a deadly fatalism to her tone that suggests she will not be taken alive.
Unsure whether to focus on the approaching cleric or keep her gaze on the crowd of adventurers at the stairs, she shifts back and forth, twisting her shoulders to square off against Sera, then the rest of the group, then back again. Each time the dagger scratched at her neck, coaxing little droplets of blood to trickle down and stain her soft, flowing linens. "I brou-brought light to the d-darkness."
The tension in the room snapped like a taut wire as a caged man nearby shouted, his voice hoarse and frantic. “Try not harm her! .....But kill that guy!!” he yelled, his words a jarring twist that only deepened the confusion. Why would anyone suggest attacking a man who was already bleeding out?
The woman on the verge of slitting her own throat wasn’t making any more sense. Her desperate muttering—“They deserved it...... I brou-brought light to the d-darkness.!”—echoed off the walls, her hand trembling as the blade pressed against her skin. What kind of revenge was this? To take her own life?
Sera didn’t have time for answers. She wasn’t a strategist or a scholar, and she certainly wasn’t one to unravel someone’s fractured mind in a moment like this. What she saw was a human being on the edge of despair, and her instincts surged to take over.
Paladine, guide me she thought, gripping her dagger tightly. And then, she felt it: a sudden calm, as if the world itself slowed down. Time seemed to stretch and quiet. The woman turned her head, her desperate eyes flickering toward the other members of the group. That was the opening Sera needed.
Without hesitation, she raised her arm, her dagger catching the dim light, and let it fly. It sailed through the air, a blur of silver aimed with divine precision.
( got a 26 on the attack calculating a dex based throw with advantage and adding +10)
Sera's blade collides against the ceremonial dagger in Dana's hand. Startled, she fumbles with the dagger and it falls to the ground with a ringing clatter. Dana stumbles backwards a few steps and gasps.
"I knew it! Guards! Seize Dana and that barbarian!" You look back and find Amelista at the door pointing at Theron. In front of her are two Santekh guards and a Tiefling wearing a gold colored cloak and glaring at Theron.
Sera pull her sword and are if possible even more confused as Amalista barge in with guards and a strange tiefling demanding Dana And to her suprise the barbarian to be arrested. The tiefling also accuse the barbarian of murder? Now? The timing seems just so odd as Sera watch the chaos unfolds. Who is friend and who is foe here?
( Sera are confused and initative 5 fits very well )
The guards draw their swords and set their visage towards the scythe wielding warrior!
_Miglasezis_ and Weathervision Albert and Arvos recognize the scythe as the cursed weapon once claimed by Bran after he took it from the corpse of the cultist assassin.
Cheez_Weezle Theron has one the initiative! You're up. MrUncleTio Afterwards, Hastos may attempt to free himself (if you wish) from his cage by attacking the hinges on the cage. Based on the Object AC and Hit Points guide, the AC is 19, and the HP of it is 20 (out of 5d10).
I had to use a generic map of a sacrificial altar and modify it to fit my needs, so we're going to use our imaginations a bit. The "fiery" areas are safe to walk in, but are considered to be difficult terrain, because they are where candles are. The candles can be picked up and used if you wish. The furnace looking thing in between the cages is a cauldron filled with aromatic oils, herbs, and tallow. The altar has the mutilated and dying human on it. Aaaaaaan GO!!
"That fool did not deserve this scythe! IBAHALI VRIWHULTH IS MINE!!"
Theron goes into a RAGE and moves 5' to the WEST to engage Ebrius.
Rage As a bonus action enter a rage for up to 1 minute (10 rounds). You gain advantage on STR checks and saving throws (not attacks), +2 melee damage with STR weapons, resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, slashing damage. You can't cast or concentrate on spells while raging. Your rage ends early if you are knocked unconscious or if your turn ends and you haven’t attacked a hostile creature since your last turn or taken damage since then. You can also end your rage as a bonus action.
Theron also elects to go after a RUTHLESS ATTACK
Reckless Attack- When you make your first attack on your turn, you can decide to attack recklessly, giving you advantage on melee weapon attack rolls using STR during this turn, but attack rolls against you have advantage until your next turn.
Theron attacks with his Scythe and targets Ebrius I rolled a (2,9) +5 = 14 to HIT. If successful, I rolled a 3 (+3) +2(Rage damage) for a total of 8 points of damage.
Other opponents have ADVANTAGE against me this round.
Watching the situation turn abruptly into an all-out battle, Hastos guesses this is as good a time as any to try and get the hell out of his cage. Hastos finds a bit of debris in the corner, grabs it and slams it against the lock.
As he does, he looks over to the group and says “Hey, I know this is a bad time, but maybe- you know, a little help here? I’m handy in a fight!”
Attack: 8 + 4=12
As the rock comes there’s an audible “ping” echoing in the room.
Theron's scythe slashes into Ebrius with punishing might! It rips an angry tear into her studded leather tunic, and crimson ribbons of blood cascade through the air!
Hastos's rock clangs against the cage, making a disruptive sound, but little more.
"MURDERER!!" Green Guard grips his spear in both hands and lunges hard, jabbing at Theron's thigh, attempting to hobble the raging barbarian and drop him to the ground!
Called Shot (Rolled with Emphasis) to inflict the Prone Condition)
Attack: 13+5 = 18 (Hits)
Damage: 3, Condition Prone
Theron falls to the ground with a throbbing wound in his thigh.
Dana looks completely shocked as the scene unfurls around her. But the sight of the scythe fills her eyes with outrage and fear! "The... the SCYTHE! Ibahalii Vriwhulth! Infidel! Betrayer!!" Dana traces a symbol of fire in the air with her fingers. Her eyes go dark, and she braces herself with a wide stance. Then, with all her fury, she shouts, "Ofdio letni!" A swirling fan of radiant fire descends upon Theron, crashing into his chest like a white-hot arrow.
Dana casts Sacred Flame, dealing 5 Radiant Damage, Cheez_Weezle please roll a DEX Save (DC 12) to... I guess roll out of the way. 😅
Arvos slips closer towards Dana and the cage. He then summons a small flame that glides gently towards the lock on the gate. It's heat fizzles and blows away when it comes into contact with the metal. Dana turns her eyes towards the druid. "You! You stay away from him!"
Gaurd (Red) Moves into position to surround Theron, stepping gingerly between the candles so as not to knock them over. "Albert! Thank goodness The Golden Company is here! Dana is to be taken alive! How can we assist you?!" He thrusts his spear down at Theron almost like he's baling hay with it.
Moves Right (x3) through Difficult Terrain Attack (with Advantage): 19+4 = 23 (Hits) Damage: 3+1 = 4 (Halved by Resistance) = 2
Albert pulls the rug and finds a neatly hidden trapdoor. "Friends, I found our way. Be swift!"
Albert opens the trapdoor and lets everyone else in first.
