Since the Last War, the Dragonmarked Houses have effectively ruled Khorvaire, dominating almost every industry, from inns and taverns to transportation. Their politics have grown in size and ambition, sometimes at the expense of the common folk. Now, at the urging of the Five Nations, the Houses are coming together to prove they can work together and put their scheming aside. Each of you has been chosen specifically by your house to represent them at this meeting, whether it is for your diplomatic skill, distinguishing ability, political pull, or something else.
Hey guys! Welcome to an Eberron campaign high in politics and roleplay. You'll each be playing a member of one of the dragonmarked Houses chosen for this Dragonmarked Peace Initiative. This campaign will be very layered-each character will have separate, possibly conflicting missions from their House. This campaign could get very confusing, so be prepared. The campaign will run on Discord to help it run more smoothly, and I'd like it if people could post at least once a day. I do understand that life sometimes doesn't make that possible, but long periods of unexplained radio silence will be problematic, and you will be removed. Just give me a heads up if you'll be MIA for a while. I'd still like to share this story with others, if they're interested, so a link to the server will go up on here after I've chosen characters so that others can view the game if they want. I'll be choosing 4-6 players for this campaign.
I want players who are skilled roleplayers and can keep OOC and IC knowledge separate. For example, let's say Jean sees someone Carl knows, but doesn't tell him. If Carl starts rolling Insight, he's using his OOC knowledge, because he has no reason IC to think Jean is lying. Or if players let their OOC emotions affect their IC actions. On that note, please try to be respectful of others. Sarcasm does not come off well through Discord, since the only things we see are the icon and text, not the expression.
Here's what I'd like for each character submissions. First of all, submissions should have a dragonmark. Unfortunately, this does rule out the custom Eberron races; changelings, shifters, kalashtar, and warforged. If you really want to play one of these, talk to me, and we might be able to work something out, but in general, please stick to dragonmarked races. Background on dragonmarks, including which races get which ones, are in the spoiler below. PM me a name, race, class, backstory, physical description, personality, and goal(s). Personality could be something simple like "cheerful and talkative", or a full description of traits, bonds, flaws, ideals. Goals should be individual, but they can be connected to your house. I do not want a full character. Feel free to send in 2 character ideas if you'd like-it will likely improve your chances. Characters should be level 3. Character application will be open for two weeks, and I'll send out links to the Discord for players on September 4. If you have any questions, you can either put them on this thread or PM me. Homebrew will be handled on a case-by-case basis. See the spoiler below for an example submission.
Character Submission Example
Name: Kara Delniss Race: Halfling Mark of Hopsitality Class: Bard 3 Physical Description: Tanned, with blonde hair and green eyes. Tall for a halfling, cheeks that turn bright red when she gets excited. Personality: Cheerful and talkative, happy to be friends with anyone she meets. Backstory: Kara ran a lovely inn for several years in Sharn, but eventually passed it off to her brother in order to mentor young Ghallanda heirs. Her level of success and her natural charisma inspired her House to choose her for the Peace Initiative. Goals: Kara wants to expand House Ghallanda's influence into the other Houses so that they think of Ghallanda as a friendly, but harmless House.
Basic Information on Eberron
What is Eberron? It’s a world bound by a golden ring and surrounded by twelve moons. It’s the intersection of thirteen planes of existence, which shift in and out of alignment. It’s a place where magic has been harnessed as a tool — used to build cities, to sail ships through the skies, to create both wonders and weapons.
Eberron embraces swashbuckling action and pulp adventure and adds a layer of neo-noir intrigue. Stories don’t always end well and there isn’t a perfect answer to every problem. The Last War turned old allies into bitter enemies and destroyed an entire nation, leaving terrible scars behind. Crime and corruption lurk in the great cities of Khorvaire. Hidden dragons shape the course of history. Sinister fiends influence the dreams of the unwary. Human greed and ambition may prove more dangerous than any devil or demon. But through this darkness, there are opportunities for a group of bold adventurers to make a difference… for better or for worse.
A Magical World. From warforged and airships to the mighty dragonmarked houses, magic is a part of the world and its stories.
Pulp Adventure. Whether you’re leaping from an airship or battling demons in forgotten ruins, Eberron encourages cinematic action and swashbuckling adventure.
Neo-Noir Intrigue. Eberron is a world of difficult choices. The line between hero and villain is easily blurred, and even the champions of the light may have things they regret.
The Last War. Eberron has just emerged from a century-long civil war, and the scars of that bitter conflict remain. How did the war affect your character, and how will it shape your story?
The Mourning. This mystical cataclysm destroyed an entire nation and created a deadly wasteland in the heart of Khorvaire. The Mourning brought the war to an end, but it is a mystery and a threat that looms large over Eberron.
Ancient Mysteries. Powerful artifacts are hidden in the ruined cities of giants. Dragons and demons scheme in the shadows, unraveling a prophecy that could shape the future. These ancient mysteries can be a source of fantastic adventures and terrible danger.
Please note that in Eberron, things are a little different than they are in Faerun. Most races are in a different place than in the Forgotten Realms.
Dwarves have a strong bond with family, friends, and home, regardless of what land they live in. Many live in the Mror Holds, a loose confederation of merchant princes within twelve noble clans.
Elves are split into two cultures. The introspective Aereni are ruled by the Undying Court, a group of undead elves sustained by positive energy. Most of them are isolationists. The warlike Valenar form bonds with patron ancestors, allowing these patrons to live on through them.
Gnomes possess a lust for knowledge that is equaled by their love of intrigue-their homeland of Zilargo is a network of scheming and intrigue ruled over by the secret police known as the Trust. The Trust keep the peace in Zilargo, and the gnomes there trust that their every action is to do that.
Half-elves are scattered all over Khorvaire, and find the term "half-elf" offensive, preferring to call themselves Khoravar, "children of Khorvaire". Aereni have never allowed a Khoravar into the Undying Court, and Valenar don't consider them worthy of channeling an ancestral spirit.
Half-orcs are often the children of orc druids and humans from the Shadow Marches. Or they might be from the Demon Wastes, where orcs are devout followers of the Silver Flame. Either way, orcs are not seen as inherently bloodthirsty or cruel, although half-orcs are often assumed to be House Tharashk bounty hunters.
Halflings in the Talenta Plains are fierce, dinosaur-riding barbarians. The most influential halfling in the Five Nations are the halflings of the Boromar Clan, a widespread thieves guild based in Sharn.
Humans are as widespread and diverse in Eberron as they are in the Forgotten Realms. From the religious Brelish to barbarians from the Shadow Marches, humans spread far and wide across Eberron.
Dragonmark Background
A dragonmark is a symbol etched on the skin in colors more vivid than any tattoo. This sigil is a source of mystical power. A dragonmark enhances the user’s ability to perform certain tasks. Here is a brief overview of each of the marks, including the House they are associated with:
The Mark of Detection sharpens power of observation. House Medani serves as threat assessors for both physical and social threats, and care more for assisting communities than raw profit. The Mark of Detection only appears on half-elves.
The Mark of Finding sharpens senses and allows a hunter to more easily track their prey. The half-orcs of House Tharashk are the best bounty hunters around.
The Mark of Handling helps its bearer control animals. House Vadalis provides a great deal of the food in Khorvaire. It also magebreeds battle beasts, treating animals as nothing more than tools. The Mark of Handling only manifests on humans.
The Mark of Healing allows the halfling who bears it to heal others instantly. House Jorasco provides mundane healing services for free, and magical options for a cost. House Jorasco dominates the healing industry in Khorvaire, but there are rumors they worked with House Vadalis during the Last War to create biological weapons and new creatures.
The Mark of Hospitality helps its bearer perform simple services like cooking and cleaning, but it also allows them to make friends easily and put others' minds at ease. House Ghallanda runs many inns and taverns in Khorvaire, and the blink dog seal is a guarantee that an establishment meets standards of quality and cleanliness. The Mark of Hospitality only manifests on halflings.
The Mark of Making guides its bearer through any act of creation, from mending simple items to building complex eldritch machines. In the Last War, House Cannith's headquarters were destroyed, leaving three barons jockeying for leadership. The humans of House Cannith were instrumental in the Last War, creating weapons such as the warforged.
The Mark of Passage aids motion, allowing its bearer to move in the blink of an eye. House Orien has a nearly unchallenged monopoly on land transport with their coach system, but the introduction of Lyrandar airships have begun challenge that monopoly, intensifying the rivalry between the two Houses. The Mark of Passage only manifests on humans.
The Mark of Scribing helps the bearer in acts of communication, both written and spoken. The gnomes of House Sivis handle all communication in Khorvaire through complex systems of speaking stones. House Sivis works to maintain absolute neutrality, and though the different families engage in various intrigues, they never let it threaten the integrity of the house.
The Mark of Sentinel heightens its bearer's senses, allowing them to shield themselves from harm and react with lightning reflexes to danger. House Deneith is the king of the mercenary business, employing wide ranges of fighters and selling its services to all sides of the conflict. The Sentinel Marshals are elite members of House Deneith that have the authority to pursue criminals and enforce the law across the land. The Mark of Sentinel only appears on humans.
The Mark of Shadow lets an elf weave illusions and draw on shadows. There are two Houses with the Mark of Shadow. House Phiarlan, the older of the two, has better spies, while House Thurrani, the younger, contains the better assassins. House Phiarlan and House Thurrani have a bitter rivalry.
The Mark of Storm allows the half-elf who bears it to control wind and water. House Lyrandar's harness air and water elementals, while their airships, only a decade old, are already challenging House Orien's overland travel monopoly.
The Mark of Warding gives its bearer an innate understanding of locks and seals. It also lets them put such wards in place. The dwarves of House Kundarak maintain prisons and banks to an unparalleled degree, including a set of extradimensional vaults that allows clients to deposit and access their goods from any Kundarak enclave.
Dragonmarks function as either variant races or subraces, depending on the race. With humans and half-orcs, they are a variant race, replacing all normal traits associated with that race. For half-elves, they are a variant race, replacing the Ability Score Increase, Skill Versatility and Language traits, leaving the rest. For dwarves, elves, gnomes and halflings, the mark replaces their subrace. For example flavor-wise, you can still be a wood elf, but you get none of its mechanical benefits.
Physical Description: Tanned, with braided black hair and blue eyes. Tall and strong he has the lean figure of someone used to long hints and the patience that goes with it.
Personality: Hard and driven he tends to keep silent. He has few friends but he is intensely loyal.
Backstory: A survivor, he hunts fugitives for his house and he is a devout follower of the Sacred Flame ( might take a level of cleric later if possible ). He has a clear moral compass and it is one of the reasons he was chosen for the Initiative
Goals: To bring Light or at least justice to the Houses and let that trickle down to the less fortunate.
Hey, I've been getting a lot of applications, but one thing I have noticed is an absence of backstories. To me, backstories represent that you've put thought into your character, and the presence of one will increase your chance of getting chosen. I'm totally fine with people updating submissions they've sent me to add a backstory, and I'll go ahead and expand on what I mean by a backstory. A backstory should explain the basics of where your character comes from, why they might have been chosen for this initiative, and perhaps most importantly, should have knives. Knives are things the DM can use to raise the stakes of a situation, like loved ones or secret shames. Finally, a backstory should be unique to your character. The more typical or unoriginal a backstory is, the less likely your character is to get chosen. Thanks, and I look forward to seeing submissions!
Okay, I have PMed everyone who I selected with the Discord link. I had so many amazing applications, and it was amazing seeing all the thought put into the various characters. I'll post the link for anyone who wants to spectate this weekend.
Do you still take applications? Or can we consider this thread closed?
